Nine Hells

[edit]

5th Edition seems to prioritize the name "Nine Hells" for the lawful evil Outer Plane. I searched some books on the D&D Beyond app for "Baator" and "Nine Hells" and found the latter was far more frequent:

  • Player's Handbook: "Baator" once ("The Nine Hells (of Baator)" in the table of outer planes in Appendix C), "Nine Hells" five times
  • Monster Manual: "Baator" twice in the section on devils, "Nine Hells" over 40 times in multiple sections
  • Dungeon Master's Guide: "Baator" twice, "Nine Hells" over 30 times
  • Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus (mostly set in the first layer of the Nine Hells, unsurprisingly): "Baator" 0, "Nine Hells" passim

The last seems particularly strong evidence to me that Wizards considers "Baator" to be legacy, largely obsolete terminology. For this reason I'm changing "Baator" to "Nine Hells of Baator" in the template. Hairy Dude (talk) 22:54, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
