Problems
[edit]If you look at the hundreds of pages that use this template, it is clear that almost none of them use it correctly. Some uses could be automatically fixed, like where it's surrounded by spaces could be replaced by spaced ndash, removing the first space. And where it has a space only on the right, it can just be replaced by spaced ndash. Also, when it's used without any spaces, it can be replaced by a literal ndash character, so then there will remain only a moderate set to review. When they're all gone, we can delete this template that nobody understands or uses correctly, no? Dicklyon (talk) 00:05, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
- Yes. Tony (talk) 00:40, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
- OK, but there are hundreds to do, and I'm not going to get there "by hand". You have a way to help with scripts or bots? Dicklyon (talk) 02:05, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- It looks like the bot messed things up, too, by putting the spaced ndash template in the lead section of articles. Templates don't show up in tooltip previews, so it results in strange-looking text with missing punctuation in this instance, all of which will need to be manually corrected. — QuicksilverT @ 16:34, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

- No.
- (a) Two guys talking to each other on a template talk page are not reasonable amount of consensus for a template being removed (badly) from 2k-3k pages.
- (b) I know the pages I'm using it for are fine and they make up most of the first page of links; so what is it you two think the problem is? — LlywelynII 17:33, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

"Banshee" in the TV section currently links to "bansee" the thing. It should actually link to "banshee (TV series)" ie http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Banshee_(TV_series)

Template:Ndash → Template:En dash – The common name for this character. – Alakzi (talk) 13:54, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
- This is a contested technical request (permalink). Philg88 ♦talk 20:26, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
- Comment Used in thousands of articles and familiar to many editors. It would seem appropriate to discuss before moving. Philg88 ♦talk 20:28, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
- @Philg88: A redirect would remain in place, so I don't see what difference it makes to any of the many editors, or what the significance of it being used in thousands of articles is. I moved the em dash from the cryptic {{--}} to {{Em dash}} earlier, so I thought I'd move this one too for consistency. Alakzi (talk) 21:30, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
- @Alakzi: I have no opinion one way or the other, I'd just like to see other (if any) editor's views before the move. Philg88 ♦talk 21:55, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
- That should be named {{mdash}} to match the HTML entity. -- 70.51.203.69 (talk) 04:13, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

- Oppose it should match the HTML entity name "ndash", which it currently does. -- 70.51.203.69 (talk) 04:13, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
- Why should it match an HTML escape sequence this template does not even use? No, the template name ought to represent the concept of the en dash, without care for any of its implementations and their constraints. Alakzi (talk) 10:54, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
- Support—"en dash" is much more recognisable. I've seen "en rule" (New Hart's Rules, the Oxford style guide), but that is unusual outside the UK. Tony (talk) 10:31, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
- Support if nothing else but for consistency with {{Em dash}}. -- Tavix (talk) 18:22, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
- Support per above and per the fact it's more recognisable - We already have "Em dash", and as an aside even the character map here states it as "En dash" so personally see no valid reason why this shouldn't be moved, –Davey2010Talk 22:41, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
