What do the NBA and other sports have to do with the NHL? Also, we should add a link to the World Cup of Hockey.--Sonjaaa 04:11, Sep 6, 2004 (UTC)
Standardization
[edit]I'm working on standardizing the various major North American leagues into a standard template, for the ease of viewing. As a result, I've been taking ideas from one and transplanting them to others. Here, I modified the box to break the teams down into divisions, like in the NBA box. I think it makes it easier to find teams, organized by division. Feel free to leave comments. -- Kermitmorningstar 06:13, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
Margin
[edit]The template needs a margin so that when templates are placed successively on pages such as the NHL page that there is a minimal amount of space between them. The alternative to include the space in the mage but that leaves too much space, and is usually cleaned up when people make changes with AWB, etc. -- Jeff3000 21:53, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Division vs. Alphabetical
[edit]I think we should change the box so its more like the other league boxes. Put the teams in by division instead of putting them in alphabetically. Agreed? Disagreed?Portlygrub 11:06, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed. The Trophies and Defunct teams sections should also be included as a single link at the bottom of the template (and maybe moved into their own templates) like the other three major sport templates {{NFL}}, {{MLB}}, and {{NBA}}... PaulC/T+ 07:22, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
1. Moved individual trophies/awards to {{NHLawards}} and replaced with link to awards page. Done
2. Moved defunct teams to {{NHLdefunct}} and replaced with link to defunct page. Done
3. Converted to new {{Navbox with columns}} template and implemented same format/color scheme as {{NFL}}, {{MLB}}, and {{NBA}}. Done
I also added a link to the WHA, but I believe that was the only change I made (unless I lost track). There are a few issues with the new {{Navbox with columns}}, such as I am not happy with the way I placed the Conferences, but the template does not allow a title to span more than one column (as of yet). Please feel free to add/delete/revert and provide feed back. Regards.--Old Hoss 18:40, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Conference colours
[edit]Aren't the Conference colours reversed? Red is Eastern and West is blue. --Hasek is the best 02:55, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Add one more item

Question about template use
[edit]Hi. Just a quick note - doing minor tweaks to a couple of related articles - 1924-25 NHL season and 1981-82 NHL season, I noticed this template at the end. All well and good, but it seems to appear on those articles as 'National Hockey League (2007-2008)'. I don't know if this is intended, or some weird side effect of templates - but it looks odd to have an article about the sport in the 1920s apparently using a template which is related to the 2000s... CultureDrone (talk) 22:37, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I do agree. I think the template would suffice without a date in the header. Flibirigit (talk) 18:27, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
East - West
[edit]Wouldn't it be logical to have Western Conference on the left, and the Eastern Conference to the right? I mean, that's how it appears on a map. LarRan (talk) 20:28, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm ... I guess that would make sense, but I guess I don't mind either way. - Rjd0060 (talk) 20:52, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

List of Stanley Cup Final overtime series winners
[edit]The article List of Stanley Cup Final overtime series winners has been added and removed from the template. I actually think it was a good addition, but wanted to add a common discussion area. — MrDolomite • Talk 15:49, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

New alignment
[edit]This template is obsolete. It must be updated for the new alignment. Randall Bart Talk 19:43, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Done. As the NHL has not provided the permanent division names, I have used Division A, B, C, and D. For now they still link to the Pacific, Central, Northwest, and Atlantic divisions. This is the alignment used by the NHL on NHL.com currently. Once the NHL confirms the division names these can be updated. shaggy (talk) 15:16, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- IMO, the links to divisions is WP:OR. Again, the league has not announced division names yet or whether they will use those same names, and thus it is pure speculation on whether the new divisions will be considered successors to those four old divisions. Just as the old Patrick Division was considered different from the Atlantic Division. Zzyzx11 (talk) 01:18, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- That's fair. Thank you. shaggy (talk) 02:06, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

The alphabetization in me might be going crazy, but the Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins should be switched around. The rest of the template is alphabetized normally.

Adding future team
[edit]With the imminent announcement of the 32nd team, there are a couple of options at the top of my head:
Option 1: Adding it to the Pacific Division column
Option 2: Using a "Future team" row, similar to Template:Major League Soccer, and what was done here when Vegas was announced.[1]
I would prefer the second option. In the first option, I do not like how it will cause blank spaces under the Eastern Conference teams, making it appear at first glance that it is the Western Conference that has more teams. Zzyzx11 (talk) 03:16, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Can someone mirror the template into the template sandbox? template:NHL/sandbox
Also add a documentation template at the bottom in the noinclude section
{{documentation|content= This is a navbox footer for [[National Hockey League]] (NHL) articles. The NHL is a top-level elite super league for professional ice hockey in North America. }}
This is a navbox footer for National Hockey League (NHL) articles.
The use of the documentation footer is to link to the sandbox to ascertain that the sandbox exists. It autogenerates a link to the sandbox and a mirror command to remirror the latest version into the sandbox.

- Not done There is absolutely no need for documentation of this template. – Sabbatino (talk) 14:27, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
- Partly done I agree with User:Sabbatino that there is no need for an documentation template. I have however created an sandbox with an mirror as requested here. Merry Christmas! Asartea Talk Contribs! 16:01, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
- The purpose of the documentation template is solely to link to snadbox and testcases subpages, and not actual documentation. Since it is a standard template page template that contains those links, and as of right now, those links are missing, then it would seem to be proper to add it. Otherwise the sandbox page will be invisible to future editors.
- I suppose it could say "This template should be placed at the bottom of NHL articles as a footer template, to navigate between NHL articles." for actual documentation instructions. -- 67.70.26.89 (talk) 16:07, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
- A new template has been created Template:2020–21 NHL season by team, which covers this topic. GoodDay (talk) 19:24, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
Update Divisions to current season
[edit]I'm not sure why it is to be discussed but as it has been reverted i will bring it to the talk page. I intended to update the template to show the current official divisions and the removal of conferences for the 2020-21 season. Changes are made to reflect the current status of the NHL and have been made whenever a team moves division in previous seasons. This should be implemented asap as the current division's are outdated and will confuse users. Triggerbit (talk) 01:30, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
- Triggerbit, As I said previously, this realignment is intended only for this season, in part because of the ongoing virus situation and the closing of the US-Canada border. I understand your intentions, but this is an unusual situation and it's best to wait it out. –Piranha249 16:15, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- i would have to disagree 100%, we all understand why realignment has happened but it's not about waiting it out, it has ALWAYS reflected the current official divisions. Next season the divisions will change again with Seattle entering the league and rightfully the corrections will be shown, this is no different! ..The fact that there are no conferences either this year need to be shown as to not mislead people. Triggerbit (talk) 21:20, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- If it accurately reflects the current alignment, then using the temporary alignment seems fine to me. Is still disagree with linking to the old East and West Divisions as the "current" divisions though; they are effectively completely unrelated as historical entities (no shared end of season awards and such). Yosemiter (talk) 22:32, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah this is 100% incorrect as it would be giving the false impression that those are the divisions this year. We need to reflect the current reality and then when the season is done we change to the division alignment that is in use for next season. -DJSasso (talk) 22:35, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

Fine, you guys win. I'll rollback this change now (wasn't sure where to place this reply, so I'm putting it right here). –Piranha249 02:30, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
Potential expansion
[edit]I think it's flat out wrong to have the "Potential expansion" article in the Future teams subsection. In fact, I know it's wrong. Zeke, the Mad Horrorist (Speak quickly) (Follow my trail) 18:35, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- Not at all, the article is about possible future teams. That is exactly where it should be, and we only ever have it there while there is a new team about to start. Once Seattle plays a game we will remove that whole section. You just have to go back to how we handled Las Vegas in the edit history to see that. -DJSasso (talk) 18:41, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
