A parameter to optionally remove the word "more"

[edit]

I'd do this myself if I were more familiar with Lua, but I've only ever edited like 1 or 2 Lua modules so I don't really know the relevant syntax.

I've created an example of what I'm asking for in the underlying template for this module – Template:Main list – at User:Seppi333/Example, where:

The default output for {{:User:Seppi333/Example|ABC}} produces

The use of |more=no with {{:User:Seppi333/Example|ABC|more=no}} produces

The motivation for doing this is that some sections/topics for which the main list template is relevant (due to the fact that a comprehensive list of things that constitute the topic exists on WP) do not include a list of example entries in that section. In those cases, saying there's a "more comprehensive" list at ABC is an awkward hatnote because it implies that there's a partial list located within the vicinity of where the hatnote was placed on a page when there's isn't. I remember wanting this functionality for this hatnote previously, but never got around to requesting it.

The current use cases I have in mind are for GeneWiki#Number of gene articles and Transcription factor#Number; there are no example entries included in those sections and the lists specified in the {{Main list}} hatnotes constitute complete or nearly (~80%) complete lists, respectively. I've added |more=no to the main list templates used in these articles to provide test cases in the event someone is willing to add this functionality to the module. While it is possible to do what you mean, aren't one of the currently available hatnote templates doing what you want?
  • {{See also|List of ABC}} produces: See also: List of ABC
  • {{For|a comprehensive list|List of ABC}} produces: For a comprehensive list, see List of ABC.
  • {{Further|List of ABC}}} produces: Further information: List of ABC
If the articles are titled ABC and List of ABC, I'd just use {{See also}} as it's clear from the title what the the link is. --Gonnym (talk) 19:23, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Facepalm Facepalm Yeah, you're right; #2 is the exact same hatnote as what I've requested here. Thanks for pointing that out. Seppi333 (Insert ) 19:45, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There is also {{main listing}} which gives . That is listed as an alternative on the doc page. MB 19:16, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Text used for multiple pages

[edit]

When this template is used to list multiple pages (i.e. has a second parameter), should the text read "For more comprehensive lists, see..." instead of the default? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 08:15, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
