Side templates for the presidential candidates are reviewed here. Quote, "The result of the debate was deletion of side templates, no consensus for others." RyanGerbil10(Говорить!) 01:00, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
My argument was, "Wikipedia should keep its readers and users in mind. Thus, when it comes to text, excess redundancy is bad, in order to ease readers' burden. But when it comes to navigation stuff, some measure of redundancy is good, to ease users' burden, while they try to figure out how to navigate among related pages." And, "Many articles have both a Wikiproject navigation sidebar and a horizontal navigation banner. If we delete here we'll need to go throughout Wikipedia and hamper its user friendliness wholesale (e/g at random I went to American Civil War and President of the United States which both have nav sidebars (the Civil War article, even a portal midside) along with horizontal nav banners at the bottom with so many, many Wikipedia articles that are members of a series doing the same."
But I was the only person to see it that way. E/g, Bobblehead argued, "...there isn't a reason to have two navigation boxes for the same person that do the same thing, just different locations...." --Justmeherenow (talk) 03:33, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

I see you are adding a Rudy Giuliani "segments" nav box similar to what has been done for John McCain. However, there is a difference. In the McCain case, his entire biographical account has been broken down into subarticles, which read in sequence form a detailed biography. Hence the "Life of John McCain" title in the nav box. With Giuliani, that is not the case; only three periods of his life are represented in subarticles, with other parts (early life, prosecutor, post-mayoral businessman, etc) only described in the main article. Thus, reading the subarticles in sequence will not give you the "life" of Giuliani. Therefore, I don't think this approach is valid for Giuliani (or most other political figures we have articles for). Wasted Time R (talk) 15:43, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- WP guidelines say not to delete work in progress towards improving Wikipedia --Justmeherenow (talk) 15:49, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- Nobody's talking about deleting anything. I'm just saying I think you are misapplying what was done for McCain to the Giuliani articles, and I wanted to give you the rationale for its use in the McCain case. Another article that uses this "Life of ..." nav sequence is Jan Smuts. Wasted Time R (talk) 16:05, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'm pasting this discussion to templates' talkpages. Thx --Justmeherenow (talk) 16:13, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Justmeherenow, the purpose of this bio nav box is to recreate the experience of reading the former big long bio main article, which has now been split up into segments due to size and load time issues. "Cultural and political image" was the 'wrapper' section of the former main article, and thus belongs in this bio nav box. Outside articles that were never part of the main article sequence in the first place, such as Faith of My Fathers, do not belong in this bio nav box. However they will still be included in the general JohnMcCain template at the bottom of the article, which includes all articles relevant to McCain. Wasted Time R (talk) 18:55, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- Why is not every sub-article listed, within the template's sequential listing (i/e the Mc's Positions section of the main article, linking in turn to a substantial sub-article, yet finding no place in template)? --Justmeherenow (talk) 02:03, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- I see the idea of a set article series and believe coverage of our subject's published reflections just before that of others' characterizations brings depth to the series. --Justmeherenow (talk) 18:43, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Addition of navigation boxes such as this to candidates' subarticles, directly below infoboxes
[edit]The various titles of the article dealing with candidates' 2008 campaigns are each quite a mouthful and people interested in it likely come first to the main article. In the interest of facilitating users navigation between the main article and the campaign and positions subarticles I've improved WP by adding a nav box directly under the infobox. --Justmeherenow (talk) 05:04, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- I think that these extra little boxes can easily get out of control. People will want to list all kinds of additional things. My view is that I would like to see ALL of the following items deleted from the box: Political positions, Memoir Faith of My Fathers, and Cultural and political image. These boxes ought to simply cover consecutive chronological periods of the subject's life.Ferrylodge (talk) 05:30, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'm actually pretty neutral about which subarticles should be considered by consensus notable enough to leave in or take out of the McCain bio series (eg especially the stub about McCains' autobiography could probably be cut without losing much).
- Still, I believe that insisting that all bio series should ONLY ever contain articles that would be strictly chronological subarticles would be pretty silly...and some encyclopedic catch-all article about McCain's cultural legacy that would be balanced and concisely inclusive of lots of info wouldn't be out of place for the McCain bio series at all (so, I think that the McCain "Cultural image" subarticle, even at its present level of development, doesn't hurt the series) --Justmeherenow (talk) 09:21, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

The "Memoir" entry in this nav box continues to make no sense to me. I don't think it belongs here, and if it does, why is his second memoir — Worth the Fighting For — omitted? Wasted Time R (talk) 14:37, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit]I personally think that the image on this template should be changed to this one, because it's more recent. What do other people think? 76.127.217.214 (talk) 01:04, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
