Notes on possible additions/improvements

[edit]

Potentially useful additional fields:

  • Other names / aliases for expedition
  • Start and end location. Not clear whether it's best to have these as separate fields, or to display them alongside the start and end dates.
  • Currently there's an "Achievements" field. Could also be useful to have a broader "Outcome" field. Or some succinct way to indicate whether the goals listed in the "Goals" field were achieved?
  • Links to other expeditions that logically preceded or followed-up on this one. (cf. the "Chronology" sections in infoboxes like {{Infobox album}})

Notes on potential issues with current fields:

  • "Sponsor" is possibly an awkward label, especially for more modern expeditions. e.g. The Denmark expedition was undoubtedly a Danish expedition, but it's not clear whether it's correct to say it was actually sponsored by the state of Denmark. Maybe better to relabel as "Nation" and also include an optional "Sponsor" field for cases where it makes sense to identify a particular sponsoring individual or organization?
  • Right now some fields basically assume that we're talking about a maritime expedition (e.g. the "Ships" and "Crew" fields). Perhaps should be broadened to accommodate other expeditions which were principally done on foot, or via sledge or what-have-you. (Maybe we could even have a template like {{Infobox naval expedition}} as a child of the main expedition infobox.)

Any further suggestions/comments welcome. Colin M (talk) 20:26, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata-based version

[edit]

I've started a version of this template that draws on Wikidata to support work being done on modelling research expeditions, based on {{Infobox person/Wikidata}}. It's at {{Infobox expedition/Wikidata}} and will probably take a fair bit of revision before it's generally usable, but the modelling work is producing a lot of decently comprehensive items to pull into articles.
