Suggestions

[edit]

This template needs more information, such as ability to add pushpin maps (see Municpality template)

The information, regarding geographic position should be the same as that of towns and villages, i.e., addition of longtitude and latitude And the Infobox itself should be useable by contributors and editors of articles regarding moshavim, as moshavim are, in essence, very similar in structure (especially with the economic changes over the past decade) and layout.

I would also look to see addition of a section wherein an aerial photo could be inserted (perhaps from Google Earth, or Google Map) to show how the settlement (kibbutz or moshav, is laid out (many readers are under the assumption that all settlements are laid out the same), and indicate nearby sites of interest, proximity to important routes or towns. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SZAgassi (talkcontribs) 21:54, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

reimplementation

[edit]

I've reimplemented the template in the sandbox, using {{Infobox settlement}} as a base. This rearranges information, bringing Israeli city articles into compliance with the look-and-feel of articles about cities in other countries. It also adds a slew of features while making future maintenance much simpler. I've also created a page for testcases. Please let me know if there are any objections or concerns about this change. --Stepheng3 (talk) 22:40, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Now updated. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 02:40, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
looks great, and thank you for the addition of the footnotes parameters, and for fixing the image code. I made some minor modifications to the line spacing in the native names, expanded the tracking category, and updated the documentation. Frietjes (talk) 16:56, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Two issues I noticed so far: the time zone parameter is not necessary; and specifically for villages, there is no need to separate population into things like "jurisdiction", "metro", etc. There is no possibility for more than one value. —Ynhockey (Talk) 10:03, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
you can remove the jurisdiction label by removing it from |total_type=, which will change it to 'total' instead. I have no objections to removing the timezone information. Frietjes (talk) 17:30, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have made the necessary changes. —Ynhockey (Talk) 22:55, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Coming back to the issue of population: it still has two lines: "Population" and then "Total". This is just unnecessary clutter. Is there a way to avoid this? —Ynhockey (Talk) 11:17, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

yes, now fixed. Frietjes (talk) 16:51, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with Template

[edit]

This template causes the article it is used in to be listed in the list of Pages using infobox settlement with missing country. LizzieMack (talk) 20:10, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This may be controversial, because everything related to Israel appears to be controversial, but since the documentation says that the template is for Israeli villages and the template name is "Israel village", I have set the default value of |country= to "Israel" in order to provide clearer information to readers and to avoid having these articles appear in Category:Pages using infobox settlement with missing country.
If for some reason this infobox is used for an Israeli village that is not located in the country of Israel, simply set the value of |country= to the appropriate country. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:59, 28 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a good idea. Thanks. Debresser (talk) 00:45, 29 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonesey95: The parameter being changed was incorrectly causing "Country: Israel" to appear on numerous places that aren't in Israel. It would be best to be able to leave this field blank for Israeli settlements, as (is the case of ones in the West Bank), they aren't really in any country.

If you want to have "Israel" set by default, please can you provide a solution that allows the field to be suppressed for settlements, and make sure this is implemented before reinstating something that is causing incorrect information to appear on dozens of articles. Or is the alternative simply to add the parameter "country = Israel" to all the places inside Israel that are currently lacking it? Number 57 20:13, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If this template is being used for a village that is not in Israel, I think that either the article should be changed to use {{Infobox settlement}}, or the article should follow the documentation for this template: For settlements outside of Israel, use |country= with a different value. Can you please link to an example page where this template was showing incorrect information?
Also, recent edits have caused no country to be displayed and have broken the automatic short descriptions at articles like Amka, showing "Place in Northern, {{{country}}}", so I have reverted them. Please continue to discuss, but it would be helpful if you stopped breaking the template. You are welcome to make changes in the template's sandbox and see how they work on the testcases page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:40, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In the sandbox, you might try experimenting with a test that looks for |region=West Bank, and if it is present, setting |country= to an empty value, or to something other than Israel. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:54, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There are no Israeli villages in the West Bank. There are only Israeli settlements in the West Bank. This wrapper is just one big non-NPOV problem when it is used there just as the municipality template was. Agree with comment above, infobox settlement should be used.Selfstudier (talk) 23:15, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Some Israeli settlements are villages. What is so hard to understand about this? Number 57 23:35, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
All Israeli settlements are settlements. QED.Selfstudier (talk) 23:38, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and some are cities, some are local councils and others are villages. My god this is painful. Number 57 23:39, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really care what Israel calls them or about Israeli statistics, they are not in Israel and so that is an irrelevancy. So sorry you are hurting, try aspirin.Selfstudier (talk) 23:54, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Should any interested third parties be baffled by this discourse, the conversation at Talk:Psagot#Wrong infobox refers.
Less arguing and more edits in the sandbox would be helpful. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:21, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The issue of 'Israel' displaying on articles it shouldn't has been resolved by adding the parameter to the articles in question but leaving the field blank. This means the country no longer displays. Number 57 00:29, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There is no need for any sandbox edits, the need is to cease using this infobox altogether. The situation is as described at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2020_September_21#Template:Infobox_Israel_municipality and the close comments there. Should infobox settlement be improved? Probably but that does not mean we should be inventing wrappers left and right, particularly when they are being used to push a narrative. Beitar Illit seems quite happy as an infobox settlement instead of an Israeli municipality and so can be the rest of the settlements in the State of Palestine <- the country name you are looking for but apparently unwilling to mention ("they aren't really in any country", says Number57. Yea, right.)Selfstudier (talk) 10:43, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No narrative is being pushed because the infobox does not tell readers settlements are in Israel. It is simply used for convenience by editors because it has all the appropriate parameters for Israeli municipalities (like district and regional council). This whole farce is just a ridiculous over-reaction to the word 'Israel' being in the template's name, which readers do not see, and is verging on disruption to make a point. Number 57 12:23, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Till such time as this infobox is substed, it should not be broken. For the rest I agree with what was said above by most, that since this template is clearly called "Infobox Israel village" the default country should be Israel, and in cases where that is incorrect, simply stop using this template. To state the obvious for those who don't understand how to work logically and correctly: incorrectly using this template is not a reason to change this template, but to replace this template by {{Infobox settlement}}. Debresser (talk) 11:29, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As I said above, the issue is fixed. This infobox can be used without displaying country = Israel, so there is no need to stop using it. Number 57 11:59, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. When I said "Till such time as this infobox is substed" I did not mean that that is something I think should happen. I only wrote that in reply to Selfstudier, who said that perhaps this template should be substed and deleted. Debresser (talk) 12:04, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong usage of the infobox

[edit]

Mishor Adumim: Mishor Adumim (Hebrew: מישור אדומים) is an industrial park located in the industrial zone of the Israeli settlement of Ma'ale Adumim, about 10 minutes' drive from Jerusalem, in the West Bank. --- at the page Industrial park the word "village" doesn't even exist. Note: Ma'ale Adumim uses the generic Template:Infobox settlement. TerraCyprus (talk) 13:09, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Can't really see the issue as readers cannot see the name of the infobox. As long as it's displaying the relevant information, what's the problem? Number 57 13:15, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The "problem" is explained by the first word of the section headline. TerraCyprus (talk) 13:19, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Again, reader's don't see the word village mentioned anywhere in the article. But if you think it's an issue, why don't you simply change the infobox to another one? Number 57 13:29, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
{{Infobox property development}} may be a better fit. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:16, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Purpose of the template

[edit]

@Selfstudier and Nableezy: considering that Template:Infobox settlement is used directly in each article about a place ("settlement") in Asia outside Israel/Palestine - and BTW all of Africa and all of Latin America - and considering that it is also used in articles about places ("settlements") in Israel/Palestine - do you know what the purpose of Template:Infobox Israel village is? TerraCyprus (talk) 13:18, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is a wrapper of Infobox settlement, and is used to make it more convenient to add Israel-specific information (like district, regional council, settlement movement etc). For example, if you were to use Infobox settlement, you'd have to use the parameters subdivision_type, subdivision_type1, subdivision_type2, subdivision_type3, subdivision_type4 etc. The wrapper (this template) automatically fills these in with Israel-specific subdivisions and creates Israel-specific parameters (district, council etc). Number 57 13:29, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
How many places are created each year a) by Israel which would on an article use Template:Infobox Israel village b) by other entities in Asia (except for Russia)/Africa/Latin America which would on an article use Template:Infobox settlement? Would like to understand the scale of this template making "it more convenient" and not having that feature for most other places. TerraCyprus (talk) 13:35, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There are over 1,000 uses of this template. As you can see here, several countries have wrappers of Infobox settlement. Number 57 13:42, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Could you answer my question aimed at finding out the scale of convenience for "Israeli villages" vs. other places in Asia (except Russia)/Africa/Latin America? TerraCyprus (talk) 13:54, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've no idea. What exactly is the issue here? Number 57 14:00, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The purpose of this template is the same as it is for the rest of the templates in Category:Templates calling Infobox settlement. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:34, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Then it is redundant and could be replaced by "the rest of the templates in Category:Templates calling Infobox settlement" TerraCyprus (talk) 14:42, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you understand the purpose of wrappers. They exist purely to make using other templates simpler. That's what the purpose of this is, and it isn't redundant. Number 57 15:21, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I think it's useless. But I don't care enough to do anything about it as long as there's no narrative pushing for places not in Israel.Selfstudier (talk) 14:30, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yet another bug - no type

[edit]

Since the infoboxes that use this template didn't display any type of place, I set the type according to the template name, but was reverted [1]. How to fix? TerraCyprus (talk) 10:35, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why does it need one? Has anyone missed it in all the time it's not been used? Number 57 10:58, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Auto-shortdesc issue

[edit]

The generated description only gives the name of the district without clarifying that it’s a district name.

For instance, I get “Place in Northern, Israel” when it should be “Place in Northern District, Israel”.

Thanks, RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 06:35, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The easiest way to fix this is probably to change the wikilinks in |subdivision_name1= within this template to provide the word "District" as needed, so that in a given article, the line reads "District: Northern District". We can't just add the word "District" to the short description, because Judea and Samaria Area is one of the options for |district=. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:26, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This would also need correcting for anything in the Judea and Samaria Area as those are not in Israel. nableezy - 13:40, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 19 October 2023

[edit]

Add the following parameter invocation (see {{Infobox settlement}}): |native_name_lang = he

This will allow use of this template without explicitly transcluding {{Script/Hebrew}} in the hebname parameter. Ibadibam (talk) 19:18, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please make your requested changes to the template's sandbox first; see WP:TESTCASES. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:26, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
