Deletion

[edit]

I would vote for this to go, or at least to be changed considerably in content. The topics verge on offensive caricature; they certainly present a very lopsided view of England. If it is to be kept, I think some thought should be given to the purpose the navbox is supposed to serve. (Also Yanks should be debarred from adding anything to it....) 212.219.56.214 14:53, 27 July 2006 (UTC) beckham was born in 1444 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.33.23.186 (talk) 22:36, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template Design

[edit]

I do not whether I missed anything in the discussion, but I really dislike the new design of this template, which I believe ought to be kept in the same design as all of the other templates for the home nations of the United Kingdom. As well as providing continuity, the design is also a nicer layout and I would prefer that this be restored.

For example:

Home Nations

Scotland, Wales, N Ireland:

and then, England

It seems that the change in style was a result of the AfD discussion as the discussion was very recent I'm a bit reluctant to change the format immediately. I have created a possible alternative in my user space, though, just in case:

There is already a template for topics on Northern Ireland, based on the designs of the topics of all of the Constituent countries. The template was created for use in the Northern Ireland article, the Northern Ireland portal and the Northern Irish Wikipedians' notice board and no notice was given on the template's talk page about any AfD discussion. --Mal 08:49, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Roast beef???

[edit]

How is that an "England topic"? I was not aware that we ate any more beef in England than anywhere else. (I'm a vegetarian by the way, so I don't eat any). I'd have thought something like Tea would be slightly better than roast beef... Mahahahaneapneap 13:32, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, it seems ridiculous to have that in this template. I propose that it is removed. Bob talk 10:20, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You do know that the French call us rosbifs? (Fairs fair, we call them frogs or froggies) if you would expect a reference to snails & frogs legs when discussing french cuisine (& I would) then I think roast beef sould be mentioned when discussing the English. I like it, tongue in cheek & self deprecating. I'm going to re-instate pending further discussion. MGSpiller 22:48, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still not convinced that it is notable enough to be in a topic box, especially when it's such a poor page. As the above commentator suggests, there are a number of English dishes and drinks that are culturally important. I have changed the reference to link to British cuisine. Bob talk 10:50, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's a better solution than removal, I didn't look at the pages to be honest. Certainly the one you linked to is a better page. MGSpiller 19:03, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

Wouldn't the History sections of these templates be better served in chronological order instead of alphabetical like the others? --Kitch (Talk : Contrib) 19:05, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Law

[edit]

Shouldn't this template include English law, not least becuase it is one of the most wide-spread models for legal systems in the developed world? Suggest expanding "Government" section to include "Government and Law" Dick G 03:22, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Addition of Heraldry

[edit]

I have added Heraldry under symbols. I can't see it's controversial, it is a well-sized article, very related and England-specific. If there are any views you can say so here. Jarry1250 (talk) 19:42, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Saint Alban

[edit]

Saint Alban was added to the template earlier today with the summary "in 2006 some Church of England clergy suggested that Alban should replace St George as the patron saint of England." While this is true, I wonder if this potentially leaves it open to include several English/British saints - Cuthbert, Swithun, Aidan, etc, which could become a bit unmanagable. What do other people think? Bob talk 23:44, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
