Proposal

[edit]

It has been proposed on commons that Image:Flag of Croatia.svg should not be used as an icon but instead of it should be used Image:Flag of Croatia icon.svg.

This is because the ratio of 2:3 is more visible. I think that this change would not lead to mass production of such icon files. Even if such event should happen it would be an advantage for all those flags that couldn't be readable if 1:2 or even more discrepancy ratio is applied.

I hope that for the sake of the icons we could agree on most visible or readable ratio and use 2:3 ratio for all icons, but this is long way into the future.

Croatia should be a starting point.

1:2 ratio is fine. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 05:49, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Why, if 2:3 would be better for the end-users point of view. -- Imbris (talk) 19:22, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can still see the checkers in the middle, plus, the main point is the text to the side of the flag. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 19:26, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The template can be modified so that correct text "Croatia" or whatever text appears (like Republic of Croatia, Croatian, Croatian Portal) or whatever text that is needed. I have noticed that almost no one have noticed that users (on commons) suggested usage of 2:3 ratio for better visibility purposes. -- Imbris (talk) 19:38, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Because as a commons sysop, we just worry if the flag is accurate, not what the other projects want. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 19:48, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. But why don't make this tiny change. If someone should object you can always revert it. The change is currently in place on commons (Template:CRO and Template:HRV). -- Imbris (talk) 19:53, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template needs repairs

[edit]
Flag of Croatia 1939-1944
Flag of Croatia 1944-1945
Flag of Croatia 1945-1992
Illegitimate flag of the Nazi-puppet Independent State of Croatia (1941-1945), formed on Axis-occupied Yugoslav territory

The template sorely needs improvement. I'm requesting an unblock.

  • Background historical info:
  • The current state of affairs on this template is arranged as if the Ustaše flag of the Nazi-puppet Independent State of Croatia (NDH) was the flag of Croatia instituted in 1941. This is incorrect. Proposed changes:
    • The Ustaše flag of Croatia should be listed as "{{flagicon|Croatia|NDH}}" or "{{flagicon|Croatia|Ustase}}". Clicking on the flag should NOT link to Croatia but to the Independent State of Croatia article.
    • The 1939 flag of Croatia should be introduced into the article as "{{flagicon|Croatia|1939}}". It should (maybe) link to the Banovina of Croatia article rather than to the Croatia article.
    • The 1944 flag of Croatia should be introduced into the article as "{{flagicon|Croatia|1944}}". It should (maybe) link to the Socialist Republic of Croatia article rather than to the Croatia article.
    • The 1945 flag of Croatia is fine, but it should maybe link the Socialist Republic of Croatia article rather than to the Croatia article.

That said, I could use some help on how to exactly perform these edits, though I will probably figure it out. :) --DIREKTOR (TALK) 14:26, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I stumbled across the edits made on May 28 and July 5, and have had to make several repairs. First, template parameter names cannot be renamed or deleted without updating all articles that use the old names. The deletion of flag alias-1941 and the rename of flag alias-1947 broke the images used on about 80–100 articles, which I have spent several hours fixing.
The other point is DIREKTOR's request to make flag images link to alternate article names. You can't do that with a single flag template; you need additional templates. Therefore Template:Country data Independent State of Croatia is now used instead of the old 1941 variant, and Template:Country data SR Croatia is now used instead of the 1947/1945 variant names.
Lastly, I have deferred the creation of Template:Country data Banovina of Croatia, Template:Country data Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia, and/or Template:Country data Federal State of Croatia for now, since none of those flag images are used in icon form in this encyclopedia. This is a widely-used meta-template, not an image gallery in article space, so we only need to include images when they are actually needed for icon use.
Hope this makes sense! — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 00:04, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Can't talk much now, will just say that Template:Country data SR Croatia is unnecessary in my view: Croatia = SR Croatia --DIREKTOR (TALK) 00:14, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It is necessary to fulfill your request that the flag should (maybe) link to the Socialist Republic of Croatia article rather than to the Croatia article. I believe that is a more useful link, for the articles on which it is used. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 00:26, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Create template military link to Republic of Croatia Armed Forces (probably by creating the parameter |link alias-military=, to result in {armed forces|Croatia}}?). — Sundostund (talk) 19:02, 20 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Create template air force link to Croatian Air Force (probably by creating the parameter |link alias-air force=, to result in {air force|Croatia}}?). — Sundostund (talk) 19:47, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

To editor Sundostund:  done, and thanks again! P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 23:23, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I also have two additional suggestions (maybe I should put it as a separate request, but lets try it this way) – can you remove flags at {armed forces|Croatia}}, {army|Croatia}} and {navy|Croatia}}, and place their respective emblems (File:Seal of the Armed Forces of Croatia.png, File:Seal of Croatian Army.png and File:Seal of Croatian Navy.png) instead? Also, can you create template air force link to Croatian Air Force (probably by creating the parameter |link alias-air force=, to result in {air force|Croatia}}), and place File:Seal of Croatian Air Force.png there?

...and curious about the above where you suggest to replace the flags with seals. This might be something that requires garnering consensus, I'm not sure. So was wondering why the seals rather than the flags? Not questioning your deeds here, Sundostund, because so far they're superb improvements. It's just that while I know how to edit templates, I don't really know a lot about Croatia and need your help to understand. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 23:23, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To editor Paine Ellsworth: Once more, thank you for dealing with this in such a prompt way, and for describing my work here in such flattering terms... As for the seals rather than the flags, my idea was simply to place an appropriate seal (clearly representing that military branch) into a template, instead of just having the country's flag there. It does not have some particular connection with Croatia, its just a general idea of mine. But, as you pointed out, that might be something that requires garnering consensus, and that's one of reasons why I dropped that idea. — Sundostund (talk) 23:56, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To editor Sundostund: thought we'd try the seals to see if others have a ready opinion. Hope you don't mind. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 00:58, 22 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To editor Paine Ellsworth: Of course I don't mind. It looks great IMHO, and I hope others won't object it... In any case, WP:BOLD is a part of working here, and should be used from time to time. — Sundostund (talk) 06:01, 22 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
