Is there an ongoing talk about this template? Not sure our editors will like the fact that links are being delinked just cause they have lodged in. Why is someone deciding with this template what is an important link for our editors - as I use ISBN links all the time? We already have some reverts and think all would love to talk about mass implantation of this before hand.Moxy (talk) 23:07, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disappointing to see that the template was still being implemented with no reply here ...after much searching I found Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Wikid77 and new 'fast' citation templates.Moxy (talk) 17:28, 11 July 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wbm1058 (talkcontribs) [reply]

Created

[edit]

The Template:Fcite was created by long-term user Wikid77, on 4 July 2012, to greatly increase the speed of formatting the citations handled by Template:Cite, as one of several lite templates, including Template:Fcite_web, to act as add-on templates compatible with the {Cite} family. Originally, the template, with limited parameters, was extremely fast, and there were fears that adding more parameters would kill performance. However, by using a series of carefully nested, prioritized if-else structures, many parameters were added, and Template:Fcite remained very fast, running nearly 80x times per second, or 5-6 faster than Template:Cite. -Wikid77 (talk) 12:11, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lessons for improving Template:Citation

[edit]

One of the unexpected benefits of developing Template:Fcite has been to pinpoint issues which are very slow in the older Template:Citation, and to help suggest improvements which might gain consensus there, some day. Some uses if gated-if structures processed the same options 3x faster than Template:Citation/core had done. Part of the benefit has been the initial use of fewer parameters, which has given more focus on ways to handle each parameter, when separated from the total set of parameters in Template:Citation. -Wikid77 (talk) 12:11, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
