Splitting after 2017: Suggestion
[edit]GodeNehler: The splitting between 2017 and 2018 did make the timeline complicated to use and uneasy to read.
In the Template:Canon EF Mount prime lenses timeline and other lens timelines it's visible that displaying 1987-2018 works well.
I suggest to undo the separation of 2018-∞ and merge the timeline. --Angerdan (talk) 12:34, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- Hello Angerdan, I thought abut another solution: to split the Template:Canon EF Mount prime lenses timeline too. I think the lists getting over time to big, and at a 13" Laptop screen, they are getting to big. Maybe a split at e.g. 2000 would make the split more equal, but 30 years was acceptable at my screen. --GodeNehler (talk) 17:49, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- With 1366x768px resolution, only the 4-digit year numbers are using space outside the cells. So a small design change would fix this. For example take a look at de:Vorlage:Navigationsleiste Pentax KAF-Objektive/Zeitleiste. And even then it's possible to step down to 1 digit year numbers like at Template:Nikon DSLR cameras or Template:Nikon film SLR cameras.
- Advantage also for users with low resolutions, since the vertical size of the tables is much smaller with one single table timeline. --Angerdan (talk) 18:56, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- I don't say NO, but I think this is only a short term solution, so we will have the same problem some years later, and I think at this long list it is hard to identify an exact year somewhere at the end. --GodeNehler (talk) 21:08, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- In the future the software (browser, wikipedia) and hardware development maybe offers new solutions and possibilities in a speed correlating to the expansion of the timeline length.
- Also there are still possibilities to save horizontal space (rowspan at focal length is 8, can be reduced by separating the aperture into a own column like at Template:Pentax K-mount AF lenses timeline --Angerdan (talk) 22:24, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

With the recent merging and optimizations even WXGA (1366x768px) shows more information than before and uses less space (~4 printing pages instead of 6 with the merged timeline). --Angerdan (talk) 11:56, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
New version for RF mount lenses
[edit]I hate to say that I have no experience making tables on wikipedia but I would appreciate if someone could make a new version of this template for RF mount zooms and primes. Scyth3934 (talk) 01:44, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Scyth3934,
- the table already exist. On is on Canon RF lens mount - a version wich I personally don't like. An alternative is Template:Canon RF-lenses. GodeNehler (talk) 06:07, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
