Only for abbreviations? or also for short phrases?
[edit]The documentation currently says several times that the template is only for abbreviations, e.g. {{Abbr}} template is intended only for use with abbreviations (including acronyms and initialisms) but gives an example where conflict of interest is the "abbreviation". While it's true that "conflict of interest" is used in the specific Wikipedia context, it's not an abbreviation. Both COI or WP:COI are abbreviations and acronyms (whether or not a colon is allowed in an acronym is probably an open question).
This is confusing. Either the example conflict of interest should be removed, or the recommended usage should be changed to also allow it for short phrases. Boud (talk) 15:12, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
- Template:Abbr/doc is also used for {{tooltip}}, where the “conflict of interest” example is more appropriate. The examples use {{BASEPAGENAME}} to render differently for each template. Perhaps the documentation should be hardcoded to use either {{abbr}} or {{tooltip}} for each example, whichever fits better. jlwoodwa (talk) 23:01, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Boud: I've tried to make the documentation more clear. Let me know what you think, Rjjiii (talk) 10:08, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
The abbr template - how often?

Question about usage in sports articles
[edit]I edit lots of articles related to WP:WHOCKEY, including many statistics boxes. There are many common statistics used in these boxes, such as GP and SV%. Sometimes, the stats boxes only use the {{abbr}}
template in the table header row (example 1), and sometimes (example 2) there's a textual explanation given before the table, in addition to using the {{abbr}}
template in the table headers.
Which is preferred? --MikeVitale 16:51, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
