[edit]This template can be used between <ref></ref> tags to provide a reference to places of worship in England and Wales that have been registered on the "Worship Register" in accordance with the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855.
Supported parameters

- Name of the place of worship

- Date of registration (see below)
- Marker to indicate whether this registration is a recertification of an earlier one
- Date of deregistration (see below)
- Folio reference at The National Archives, Kew (see below)
- Access date for the online version of the register
All are optional except the Worship Number.
Where to find the data
[edit]The original certificates (up to number 80000, issued in July 1998) are lodged at The National Archives, Kew in series RG70, folios 1–160, in ascending order of certificate number (500 per folio; e.g. certificates 1–500 are in RG70/1 and certificates 79501–80000 are in RG70/160). If the original certificate has been checked at The National Archives and the date of certification has been found, the date and folio parameters can be used to record these details. The date of deregistration (formal cancellation of a building's status as a place of worship) can also be found on the certificate if applicable; the dereg parameter can be used to record this. If a previously certified building is re-registered under a new number for any reason, enter "y" in the recert parameter to show a message to this effect automatically.
Data for all parameters except the dates of registration and deregistration can also be found in this online version of the register which was published in April 2010, and in subsequent updates published at roughly three-monthly intervals on the official gov.uk (Government of the United Kingdom) website. The latest update is always available at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/places-of-worship-registered-for-marriage; the dates of previous updates are given under the heading "Show all updates"; and the archived versions of those files can be found via this search. Details of former places of worship which have been through the formal deregistration process are no longer recorded on any of these online lists unless they were deregistered after April 2010, in which case they will appear on earlier version(s) only.
The online versions of the register show the name and denomination applicable at that date. The physical certificate will show the original details. For example, St Martin's United Reformed Church in Saltdean was registered with the name "St Martin's Presbyterian Church of England" and the denomination "Presbyterians".
Some other sources give only the Worship Number; see for example this entry in the Victoria County History of Sussex, where Worship Numbers for various places of worship are given in the footnotes.
