  • Separating the subject from the verb, the following comma is incorrect:
The waves rolled onshore, and were green.
  • Between two verbs or verb phrases in a compound predicate, the following commas are incorrect:
We gathered our umbrella and towels, and ran to the beach; I exclaimed yahoo, and tripped over the sidewalk.
  • Placed after a series, the following comma is incorrect:
The job of lifeguard that appears glamorous, easy and fun, entails considerable responsibilities.
  • Around a necessary, restrictive clause, the following commas are incorrect:
The painting, that I finished yesterday, is still wet to the touch.
  • Before a conjunctive adverb that joins two independent clauses, the following comma is incorrect:
The ultraviolet (UV) index is high, therefore use sunscreen.
  • Around a conjunctive adverb that joins two independent clauses, the following semicolon and comma are correct:
The weather is perfect now; however, a seabreeze can whip up a storm.
  • Around a conjunctive adverb in an independent clause, the following commas are correct:
I, however, did not sail.
  • Setting off an unnecessary, nonrestrictive appositive, a noun phrase, the following commas are correct:
My first anthology, Neither Here nor There, is a true accomplishment.
  • Setting off a parenthetical expression, supplemental information, the following commas are correct:
Fish do not talk, as far as I know, here on Earth.
  • Setting off a sharp contrasting phrase, the following comma is correct:

  • Between two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction, the following comma is correct:

  • After an absolute phrase that modifies the sentence, the following comma is correct:
