Purpose
[edit]This redirect category (rcat) template is used to categorize redirects from a title of a television episode to a related article or to a list of episodes, a type of article that is a collection of brief descriptions and covers the subject more comprehensively. Links to episodes should use this redirect and should not be piped with the target pagename. This allows "what links here" to be used to identify the links to the individual sections. This redirect template populates Category:Redirects from episodes and when the first parameter is not used, Category:Episode redirects to lists is also populated.
Usage
[edit]General usage
[edit]Add this redirect category to a redirect (not a talk-page redirect) in the following manner:
#REDIRECT [[(target article title)]]
{{Redirect category shell|
{{R from television episode}}
}}
Template {{Redirect category shell}} may be used to add as many appropriate redirect categories as needed. For more information see the documentation on its template documentation.
This redirect category may also tag a redirect individually:
#REDIRECT [[(target article title)]]
{{R from television episode}}
This is in accord with instructions found at Wikipedia:REDCAT.
Usage with TV series parameter
[edit]An optional unnamed parameter, |1=(name of work)
, may be used to supply the name of the TV series in which the episode is part of. This will sort the redirect into a more specific category for that work. For example:
{{Redirect category shell|
{{R from television episode|1=Friends}}
}}
or
{{Redirect category shell|
{{R from television episode|Friends}}
}}
or
{{R from television episode|Friends}}
All three of the above will populate Category:Friends episode redirects to lists.
Usage with sort key parameter
[edit]A second optional unnamed parameter may be used to provide a category sort key for the episode that is redirected. For example:
{{Redirect category shell|
{{R from television episode|1=Stargate Atlantis|2=Hive, The}}
}}
or
{{Redirect category shell|
{{R from television episode|Stargate Atlantis|Hive, The}}
}}
or
{{R from television episode|Stargate Atlantis|Hive, The}}
In Category:Stargate Atlantis episode redirects to lists, all three of the above will sort the episode redirect, "The Hive", in alphabetical order by "Hive" ("H") instead of by "The" ("T"). Without the second parameter, the category sort key will be either the redirect page name or the DEFAULTSORT:, if included.
TemplateData
[edit]TemplateData for R from television episode
A redirect category template which is used to categorize redirects from a television episode to a related article to a list of characters.
Parameter | Description | Type | Status | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Series name | 1 | The series article name. | Page name | required |
Sort key | 2 | A sort key for the redirect entry. | String | optional |
Corresponding category
[edit]Important note: the very first time that a TV series-specific subcategory is named in the first parameter, that category will appear as a red link (Category:(series name) episode redirects to lists) at the bottom of the redirect page (if this is not seen or no categories can be seen at the bottom of the page, then be sure your user preferences are set to see hidden categories). If the category link is red, it means that the category must be created to correctly sort the episode.
The category name should be similar to TV series article. So if the article uses disambiguation, the category should use it as well.
Category:(series name) episode redirects to lists
When creating the new category, place {{Fiction-based redirects to list entries category handler}} at the top as follows:
{{Fiction-based redirects to list entries category handler|media=Television}}
Printworthiness
[edit]Please do not alter the printworthy settings of this rcat without first notifying the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, who are responsible for any and all materials, including redirects, that go into a printed version of Wikipedia. |
In main-article namespace, many redirects from television episodes are printworthy; however, there are many others that are unprintworthy, so there is no default sort for printworthiness. In 2003, efforts were begun to support the Wikimedia Foundation's goal of increasing access and availability of Wikipedia articles in printed versions. Some redirect category templates automatically populate either Category:Printworthy redirects or Category:Unprintworthy redirects by default. Others, like this template, do not, and that means it is up to editors to choose which of those categories, Printworthy or Unprintworthy, is appropriate and should be populated. The templates that are used separately to populate those categories are:
{{R printworthy}}
{{R unprintworthy}}
