The prototype Space Shuttle Enterprise in free flight during its second Approach and Landing Test at the Dryden Flight Research Center in Edwards Air Force Base, California, in 1977. The series of taxi and flight trials tested the shuttle's flight characteristics, both on its own and when mated to the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.
