Template:LGBT Olympians overview/doc

Syntax

Insert {{LGBT Olympians overview}} where you would like the template to be shown.

The template is everything between the documentation notices, including the notes list.

Notes list

The notes list header is self-contained bold text: it will not create a new section at articles where the template is inserted.

The notes list is created by a {{reflist}} template showing {{efn}} footnotes labelled as group=N: it will not show any footnotes that are not written in this format. This means it will almost certainly not disrupt other references and notes at articles where the template is inserted. If the article already uses footnotes written as {{efn|group=N|}}, consider changing these at the article, or they will be shown in the notes list of this template.

Use

The template is intended for use at List of LGBT Olympians and Paralympians.

It is not contained there for two reasons: the length of the listicle, and the fact that it may also need to be updated when other related listicles are edited.

Content

The template includes more information than is presented at List of LGBT Olympians and Paralympians – specifically: gender identities, nations represented, years participated in, and events participated in. The template thus relies on user examination of the sources at List of LGBT Olympians and Paralympians and/or information presented at the more-detailed sub-lists (all linked from the List of LGBT Olympians and Paralympians).

The statistics shown by the template are thus based on the linked information and simply adding this together per WP:CALC.

As the template is anonymous, it could be difficult to attribute which information relates to which Olympians. This could create an issue with verifying the template information, as well as editors knowing if the statistics of any given Olympian are already included or not. To remedy this, the talkpage of the template includes expanded lists which de-anonymize the data in the template.

The total number of Olympians reflected by each of the four tables at the template will not agree with each other, nor the total number at List of LGBT Olympians and Paralympians. This is because the tables at the template count Olympians multiple times when they have: represented multiple nations, participated in multiple years, and participated in multiple events. Olympians are not counted multiple times if they have participated in different formats of the same event (e.g. BMX and track cycling).

The naming/collecting of the sports and arts is done to agree with how these are named at the relevant listicles. E.g. trampolining is collected under gymnastics. If this changes at the listicles, it should also be changed here.

The template lists individuals by their gender identity, not by which category they competed in.

In the template's tables for events, there is more detailed gender listing, separating people who identify as female and male into whether they are cisgender, transgender, or intersex. When their gender identity does not match their category of competition, this is noted. A similar separation is rather moot for non-binary people in terms of sporting competition: besides the open events (e.g. equestrian and artistic swimming), the Olympics use binary categories and so a non-binary individual's gender and competition category will (in most instances) not align. Thus, their category of competition is also noted.

Updating

It is simple to update the template with information, by changing the numbers in each table cell relating to the information – e.g. increasing the table cell at the interception of "F" and "Argentina" by 1 when adding one female Argentinian Olympian. All information is reflected twice in each row, once per gender identity and once at the end of the row in the total count (and needs to be updated in both columns).

The template should contain all the relevant information relating to all the individuals listed at List of LGBT Olympians and Paralympians. When this list is edited, the template should likewise be updated.

Sometimes, information is not edited at List of LGBT Olympians and Paralympians, but is at one of the sub-lists – when an Olympian who is already included participates at another Games (which may also involve representing another nation or participating in another event), or publicly states a different gender identity. When such information is edited, the template should likewise be updated.

Before updating, please check the talkpage of the template to see if the information you are planning to update is already reflected. Likewise, please update the talkpage tables when updating the template.

Removing

If you are removing an individual, please remove all associated data, including all nations, years and events.

Each individual is reflected twice in each row – for their gender identity and the total count (per nation/year/event) – and both need to be removed.

Please also remove them from the talkpage tables (where they should also appear at least twice; searching by name is possible).

Adding

If you are adding an individual, please include all associated data, including all nations, years and events. Please also add this data to the talkpage tables.

Remember to add them to the count in each row for both their gender identity and the total count.

If they have represented multiple nations, please add a note explaining such to the count for each nation. The note format used is explained at this documentation, and examples can be seen in the template currently.

It is reasonably common for Olympians to participate in multiple years, and no individual notes are used for this table.

If they have participated in multiple formats of the same event (e.g. BMX and track cycling), do not count them twice in the same table cell. Typically, notes are not used for this table, either, as events also change relatively commonly. When an individual has participated in the same event at both the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (e.g. Kate O'Brien), they are still only counted once, but a note may be added to explain.

Changing

The only times information should be explicitly changed, i.e. old information replaced with new, is when there is either a mistake, or when an Olympian publicly states a different gender identity.

In the case of a mistake (e.g. an Olympian who represented only China is listed for Taiwan), please first make sure that it is a mistake (rather than, e.g. the Chinese Olympian simply not being included and a different Olympian who did represent Taiwan being included), and then make the correction. It should be relatively easy to identify mistakes by comparing the information at the talkpage tables with the correct information.

An individual being mistakenly included is something that should be simply removed.

Sometimes an individual, for whom information is already included at the template, publicly states a different gender identity (i.e. at least two Olympians, a rugby player and a shot putter, were first added as female but as of 2024 identify as non-binary). Each table at the template uses gender columns for sorting other information, thus sometimes gender column should be changed:

Based on MOS:GENDERID and its supplements, this template uses only the current gender identity of individuals. I.e. those two Olympians will not have their information included in the "F" column for their previous Olympics appearances and "NB" for 2024 – their information will be included in the "NB" column for all their Olympics appearances, including those before they came out as non-binary.

Regular updates

Regular updates refers to every two year cycle (with the Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating) when already-listed Olympians compete at another Games.

Regular updates involve adding a new year row to the "By year" table at the template, and including the already-listed Olympians in the count for this row. If an already-listed Olympian is representing a different country or taking part in a different event, they can be added to these counts like a new addition.

Regular updates typically do not involve adding to the tallies for countries and events. Most already-listed Olympians will be representing the same country and participating in the same event(s) as previously, and the information should not be duplicated.

This is generally done before adding newly-debuting Olympians for that year.

Consolidating updates

Generally – i.e. unless there is a discrepancy between templates that is being corrected – when this template is edited, at least one of the following templates will also need to be edited:

• Template:LGBT Olympic artists overview – all artists at the Summer Olympics. As these events have long-since stopped, edits will be limited to corrections and new (by now, likely posthumous) revelations of an Olympic artist's sexuality/gender identity.
• Template:LGBT Paralympians overview – there are likely to be Paralympians (both Summer and Winter) who are already out competing at each instance of the Games now, as well as previous Paralympians coming out. Edits may include: updating the templates every two years as already-listed Paralympians make another appearance, adding new information every two years when already-out Paralympians make their debuts, and adding new information ad hoc when previous Paralympians come out.
• Template:LGBT Summer Olympians 1900–2000 overview – in a slight difference to the title, this would include all Summer Olympic athletes who competed at the Games from the start of the modern Games in 1896, through to and inclusive of 2000 (except Paralympians). While there are still a few athletes (namely, equestrians and former athletes who have become Olympic coaches) who made their debut in 2000 or earlier and are still competing as of 2024, the majority of edits here will be ad hoc as previous Olympians come out.
• Template:LGBT Summer Olympians 2004–2020 overview – Summer Olympic (except Paralympic) athletes who competed at the Games between 2004 and 2020 2021 (inclusive of both). Edits may be a mix of updates every four years as already-listed Olympians make another appearance, and adding new information ad hoc when previous Olympians come out.
• Template:LGBT Summer Olympians 2024 overview – all Summer Olympic (except Paralympic) athletes who competed at the Games in 2024 (or later!). There may be some ad hoc edits when previous Olympians come out, but most editing is likely to be every four years as previous Olympians make another appearance and new already-out Olympians make their debuts.
• Template:LGBT Winter Olympians overview – all Winter Olympians (except Paralympians). Edits may include: updating the templates every four years as already-listed Olympians make another appearance, adding new information every four years when already-out Olympians make their debuts, and adding new information ad hoc when previous Olympians come out.

Where corrections are made in one place, please check that the information is correct elsewhere – both at templates and the related listicles.

Each of the subsidiary templates counts all athletes who competed in the relevant years, including those who debuted earlier. This is different to the listicles, which include only debuts during the relevant period. E.g. there are over 200 Olympians listed at Template:LGBT Summer Olympians 2024 overview, while List of LGBT Summer Olympians (2024–present) only includes the 79 debutants. Please update templates and articles accordingly.
