From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Syntax

[edit]
{{Indian patronymic|[given name]|[patronymic]|note=on (optional)|notemalay=on (optional)}}

Usage

[edit]

This template is a hatnote that can be put at the top of a biographical article to point out to readers that one element of a person's Indian patronymic is not the family name but a patronymic, that is, the given name of their father.

Parameter Description
[given name] Replace this term with the person's given or personal name(s).
[patronymic] Replace this term with the person's patronymic, or father's name.
note Optional: if "note=on", the following explanatory note is displayed: "The abbreviation 's/o' or 'd/o', if used, means 'son of' or 'daughter of' respectively." These abbreviations are sometimes used by Indians in Singapore. If "note=off" or the "note" parameter is omitted, the explanatory note is not displayed.
notemalay Optional: if "notemalay=on", the following explanatory note is displayed: "The abbreviation 'a/l' (anak lelaki) or 'a/p' (anak perempuan), if used, means 'son of' or 'daughter of' in Malay respectively." These abbreviations are sometimes used by Indians in Malaysia. If "notemalay=off" or if the "notemalay" parameter is omitted, the explanatory note is not displayed.
