Template:Ilfn/doc

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Usage

[edit]

Template {{ilfn}} is used to produce a bottom-of-the-page type footnote that can be used "in-line" in a comment, such as on a talk page, where a ref list may be undesirable. Place it at the end of the paragraph or comment in which you wish to use it. It produces small text with proportionate line spacing, preceded by a superscript asterisk. It also produces a small amount of additional whitespace below it.

The typical way to use this would be to insert [*] in mid-passage at the point to which the footnote pertains, then put the {{ilfn}} footnote template at the end of the passage.

This template does not produce any link from the [*] to the footnote, nor a back-link from the footnote's opening * to return to the main text. If this feature is needed, try {{efn}} and {{notelist}}, especially if there needs to be more than one note. This template does not handle additional **, , etc., footnote designations, or any other footnote-marker customization.

Parameters

[edit]

This template accepts one or two parameters. The first is required, and is the explanatory text itself. The second is not required, and it accepts one or more of colons (:) for the purpose of indenting. The second feature is only for use on talk pages (and analogues, like noticeboards); it should not be used in articles per MOS:DLIST, as it is an abuse of description-list markup for a purely visual effect.
