This template may be put near the top of a biographical article, after the first bolded mention of a person's Portuguese name, to create a note explaining the maternal and/or paternal surnames which make up the family name, as well as any generational title like "Filho".

Parameters
  • "1" or "first" – the first or maternal family name (optional, but usually present)
  • "2" or "second" – the second or paternal family name (optional, but usually present)
  • "3" or "suffix" – the generational suffix, if any (e.g., Filho, Júnior, Neto, Sobrinho, Segundo, Terceiro) (optional)

Note: Each parameter is optional, but a maintenance category will be added to articles that use this template without any parameters.

Usage note: In Portuguese names, Filho, if it appears, is usually a generational suffix meaning "Junior", and is not a family name, so it should be placed in the optional |suffix= parameter. Rarely, Filho is the family name; in this case, it would be in the |first= or |second= parameter, and the |suffix= parameter should be omitted. The same applies to Neto or Sobrinho which can be either a suffix (usually) or a family name (rarely). If you are not sure if something is a generational suffix or not, do not use the |suffix= parameter.
