Tiny the Wonder
[edit]- ... that Tiny the Wonder (pictured) could kill 200 an hour in London's rat-baiting pits? Source: "Rat-Catching at the Blue Anchor Tavern, Bunhill Row, Finsbury. A Manchester terrier called Tiny the Wonder is shown attempting to kill 200 rats in under an hour at a tavern in Bunhill Row, Finsbury. He achieved this feat twice, on 28 March 1848 and 27 March 1849, "having on both occasions time to spare". ([1])

- Nominated within seven days of creation and meets the length guidelines. Article is neutral with reliable sources cited in every paragraph. Earwigs showed a low chance of a copyright violation and there is no close paraphrasing or plagiarism. Hook is fascinating neutral and cited to a reliable source. Image is suitably licensed and appropriate. Awaiting the QPQ review. MWright96 (talk) 19:48, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you, MWright96 Apologies for the long delay. QPQ now done. Edwardx (talk) 11:49, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
- All is well. MWright96 (talk) 17:12, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
- I'm returning this nomination from prep because I'm not sure what to do about the whole quote under the Contests section. The reference is self-published and does not explain what the original source, Old Dick x Old Nell, is. Are you able to source this section to a reliable source, or else remove it? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:50, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you, Yoninah. That section was added by Aquataste. I have removed the quote in its entirety as extensive searching has turned up no other source for it. For the first part of that section I have added a 1966 Sports Illustrated source which states, "Jemmy Shaw became the doyen of London rat men and, with his friends, the nearest thing to a controlling body of the sport, he introduced the "no-touching" rule". Should all be okay now. Edwardx (talk) 10:08, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

- Aquataste I am not a Spectator subscriber, or have used up my monthly free allocation, and private browsing is not letting me see the article either. Does the Spectator article have that big quote in full? Edwardx (talk) 11:45, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
- Edwardx You can subscribe for a one-month free subscription. However, the article states:

- "Next in the judging line was a surprisingly unaltered Manchester terrier, which looks like a skinny miniature doberman in colour and outline but is nothing of the sort. A Manchester terrier is a streamlined, urbanised edition of the Old English black-and-tan terrier crossed with a pit bull terrier. It was designed by working-class men to course rabbits and kill rats in front of paying spectators. I have a reproduction early 19th-century poster advertising the rat-killing prowess of a Manchester terrier called Tiny (pedigree by Old Dick out of Old Nell) weighing 5½lb. His last notable victory, it says, was against Mr Batty’s 8lb bitch ‘Fun’, when between them they nailed 100 rats in 34 minutes. I don’t remember Peter Purves mentioning any of this either, in spite of the breed’s impeccable working-class credentials, or the breathtakingly acrobatic feats of agility required for this useful hereditary occupation. Or how horribly cruel are our occult modern methods of extermination by comparison." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aquataste (talk • contribs) 11:58, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
- Note: this appears not to have been restored to the nominations page after it was pulled, so I'm doing so now. Also pinging Edwardx and Philafrenzy, the article's creators, so they can resume their part in the nomination. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:33, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
- I think we should go with the current version which is stable. The quote above from The Spectator, which I was able to view in full, is extracted from a modern opinion piece about the recherché breeds at Crufts and doesn't say much about Tiny. I have added his pedigree to the article. The other longer quote that was removed from the article was good but its sourcing remains unclear and therefore it is unusable. New reviewer required for the current version. Philafrenzy (talk) 05:57, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
- ...As gruesome as it is...hook in article and followed by inline citation. The previous issue has been dealt with. The Old Dick x Old Nell is subscription needed...so have assumed good faith. image is okay. Whispyhistory (talk) 19:26, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
