Throne Hall of Dongola

  • ... that the Throne Hall of Dongola (pictured) is the oldest standing Sudanese mosque? Source: Obłuski et al (2013): "The Mosque Building in Old Dongola. Conservation and revitalization project"

  • Interesting and well-written article, long enough and barely new enough, within policy and free of basic problems, and no copyvio. Hook is cited in the article; it's an offline source, so I can't access it, but I'm willing to assume good faith. Hook is very interesting and QPQ is not necessary, as nominator does not have 5 DYK credits. However, I don't really like the "so-called" in there, and I think it would look nicer without it. What would you think about just removing that? Image is free, licensed properly, used in the article, and good-quality. Unless I'm forgetting or missing something, this should be good to go; nice job LeGabrie!--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 14:33, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
@SkyGazer 512: 1) Deleted "so-called" 2) The source is actually available online. LeGabrie (talk) 15:47, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks; I like that better. Also, don't know how I didn't notice that it was available online, considering you provided the link right there; silly mistake of mine. :-)--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 15:50, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but I'm confused. The lead says it's the oldest mosque still standing. But under Mosque, it says it was the oldest mosque still standing but it closed in 1969. Yoninah (talk) 23:24, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
@Yoninah: The building is indeed not used as a mosque anymore, but it is still the oldest preserved mosque in Sudan. LeGabrie (talk) 11:09, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
@LeGabrie: OK. So please adjust the lead and hook wording. The way it's worded now, it sounds like it's still operating. It's like saying the Coliseum is the oldest standing amphitheatre. Yoninah (talk) 11:22, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
@Yoninah: Better? LeGabrie (talk) 11:43, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
  • @LeGabrie: OK, it was the oldest Sudanese mosque until 50 years ago. Is that hooky? You have a good article here; could you suggest something more hooky for readers who don't live in Sudan? Yoninah (talk) 11:58, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
@Yoninah: It is still the oldest preserved mosque in Sudan, no matter if it is closed down or not. That's also how it's phrased in the original source (Obluski et al 2013): "nowadays it is known as the oldest preserved mosque in Sudan." To be honest, I think the original hook was good as it was. LeGabrie (talk) 12:22, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
I still like the original better and think the article was better when it stated that it is the oldest standing mosque in Sudan. It is the oldest standing in Sudan; it's just currently not open for use. That is indeed the reason why I approved this to begin with. Perhaps we could add/change a phrase to clarify this within the article and possibly even within the hook?--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 13:54, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
Since I am, like you, happy with the original hook I would suggest that Yoninah provides an alternative. LeGabrie (talk) 17:14, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
  • @SkyGazer 512: And the Coliseum is the oldest standing amphitheatre in Rome? Please. If you leave it as "oldest preserved mosque" it would be fine. Yoninah (talk) 17:19, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
  • ALT2: ... that the Throne Hall of Dongola (pictured) is the oldest preserved Sudanese mosque? LeGabrie (talk) 18:00, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Thank you. I suggest writing it the way you do in the article:
  • ALT3: ... that the Throne Hall of Dongola (pictured) is the oldest preserved mosque in Sudan?
  • ALT3 hook ref verified and cited inline. Rest of review per SkyGazer 512. ALT3 good to go. Yoninah (talk) 20:01, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
