Shia Wong Hip

  • ... that Hong Kong restaurant Shia Wong Hip stores hundreds, occasionally thousands, of still-alive snakes for creating snake soup?

Source: Li, Andrea (2006-05-06). "Snake soup, anyone?". South China Morning Post. Archived from the original on 2019-12-27. Retrieved 2019-12-27.

    The article notes:

But look a little closer and you will wonder what the tall wooden cabinet drawers are doing at the back of the room. Too high and narrow for storing cutlery and plates, yet impractical for keeping perishable foods, the wooden drawers are actually temporary shelters for hundreds, and sometimes even thousands of live snakes - ready to be made into soup.

General: Article is new enough and long enough

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Yes
  • Interesting: Yes
  • Other problems: No - I think you can cut out "occasionally thousands" as it detracts from the hook. Also, I really think you can nominate some much-better hooks.
    • ALT1: ... that the Hong Kong government has recognised the daughter of Shia Wong Hip's founder as the only woman snake-catcher in the region?
QPQ: Done.

Overall: Very good-quality article, with a few minor grammatical nitpicks. Just some questions about the hooks - let me know what you think. epicgenius (talk) 04:22, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

  • Thank you for the review, epicgenius (talk · contribs)! I agree that the alternative hook is much better. Thank you for suggesting it! Cunard (talk) 05:47, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
  • @Cunard: no problem. Unfortunately, per the DYK rules, I can't approve my proposed alt hook.
  • The alt hook will need another person to approve. Everything else should still be good to go, as per my original review. epicgenius (talk) 05:49, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
  • Cool article, approving ALT1 Achaea (talk) 17:53, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but the hook is a little windy and you have so much more potential for a good hook using the restaurant's own menu. Yoninah (talk) 21:14, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah: I didn't think the menu was that interesting of a hook. However, let me propose these:
  • ALT2: ... that Shia Wong Hip serves Cantonese cuisine made from animals such as wattle-necked softshell turtles, crocodiles, geckos, silkworms, and seahorses?
  • ALT3: ... that Shia Wong Hip sells dishes such as "fried snake balls", "barbecued snake", and "glistening snake skin casserole"? (or technically any other combination of foodstuff)
Feel free to criticize either of these. epicgenius (talk) 21:20, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
  • @Epicgenius: thanks for the alts, but I didn't mean listing the menu. I would write something like:
  • ALT4: ... that Hong Kong restaurant Shia Wong Hip stores hundreds of live and poisonous snakes onsite for its food preparation, as well as serves soups made of lizards, silkworms, and seahorses? Yoninah (talk) 21:28, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
Yoninah, that option looks much better. Let's see what @Achaea and Cunard: think. epicgenius (talk) 21:31, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah and Epicgenius: I tend to prefer shorter hooks, but it's well within the 200 characters, so happy with that. I would change it slightly, as it is a single soup that contains those ingredients, so maybe would phrase it as "as well as serves a soup made of lizards, silkworms, and seahorses'. Let's see what @Cunard: says. Achaea (talk) 09:12, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
  • @Achaea: shorter is certainly better when the hook is hooky. But just talking about snake cuisine is plenty hooky. Here is an amended alt:
  • ALT4a: ... that Hong Kong restaurant Shia Wong Hip stores hundreds of live and poisonous snakes onsite for its cuisine, and also serves a soup made from lizards, silkworms, and seahorses? Yoninah (talk) 11:39, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
  • Definitely! I'll put a tick on it, as I think this is ready to go with ALT4a. Achaea (talk) 11:55, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
  • I think ALT4a is good. Thanks! Cunard (talk) 00:54, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
