Overall: A very solid article (OK, it's GA), and many good illustrations that could be used, though I'm not sure why you rejected the old image of this bottle in favour of the rather small and low-res ocelot bottle image. A website seems to have plagiarised an earlier version of the article, not vice-versa. Is it harmful to ocelots to be kept as pets? Exotic felines as pets#Ocelots? The article should perhaps cover this, as well as listing famous ocelot owners. It might be good to work it into the hook as well. The extremely similar Margay is threatened by the pet trade. Thank you for your comments Cowlibob and HLHJ. I entirely forgot that the pic needs to be in the article, in that case I would rather have no pic to accompany the hook. About the bottle pic, the article originally had two of those bottle pics so I removed one but I did not notice one of them was significantly better, anyway have replaced the image. I couldn't find reliable sources about the behavior or popularity of pet ocelots.. I am not sure how reliable these two 12 are (used in Exotic felines as pets#Ocelots). Good thing you mentioned pet trade, I could find some material which I will add. Cheers, Sainsf(talk·contribs) 05:53, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
The first source looks good, as it's from an WP:EXPERT expert professional, posted on an expert institutional website, which presumably has some review; the second not so much, especially as it seems to be derived from the first. The papers cited in the IUCN red list entry are likely to be useful on the effects of the pet trade on wild population, and may be useful on the problems of ocelots in captivity. Zookeepers' sources are usually good for info on captivity; internal trade publications are often better than info prepared for the public, but both are good. Searching "Ocelot zoo":
[5] and links from it, including [6] (not a good pet)
Searching the academic literature, I add "doi" to that search term and get [7], for starters.
On the images, you could pick another image from the article, although admittedly then another hook might make more sense (this hook is not so interesting without the picture). The article might also be improved if the subspecies and phylogeny sections included images with captions that pointed out the differences in markings of the subspecies. Some info on the conservation status of each subspecies would also be good. This is not necessary for DYK, but it could give you a broader selection of images to choose from. Thanks for all the help, I will add these to the article in some time. I could not find pics for Subspecies and Phylogeny sections where I would be sure about the subspecies in the pic; guessing would be original research. I could not find info on their conservation status, I will try another search. Most probably we won't really have a set of images to choose from. If necessary, may be the bottle pic in the article can be replaced by the hook pic? I personally could not find a better hook from this article. Sainsf(talk·contribs) 07:20, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
I see you've just added quite a lot of material. Since the subspecies have largely geographically-distinct ranges, you could get the subspecies from the photo location. The IUCN and the last link in the list above have conservation info. I think the hook pic could simply be added to the end of the article, especially given that you've added more text; you could add some more about captive ocelots (for instance, their aggression, and it's effects on keeping them in groups; a/or something about zookeeping as well as housepets). The ban on trade in wild-caught ocelots, combined with the difficulty in breeding them in captivity, is interesting, and mentioned in some sources as a limit on captive ocelot supply. A hook about Tezcatlipoca in his jaguar/ocelot form as Tepēyōllōtl might also work, if you like the idea... 17:21, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
Hi, I tried looking for images clearly giving the place the image was taken, but seems there is almost no image of ocelots in the wild. I have added the hook pic in the article now, I will add more info there later. About the jaguar/ocelot form, I am not sure how to form an interesting hook out of it, plus the animal depicted is not known for sure and the source I use is just a collection of hints the author uses to demonstrate it is ocelots. Sainsf(talk·contribs) 19:16, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
I get the impression that Mesoamerican languages don't always distinguish between jaguars and ocelots, so which animal is an avatar of a god may be a bit of a moot point. HLHJ (talk) 19:22, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
I will take some time to expand the article on the aspects you mentioned, possibly for FAC. From the DYK point of view though, what should we do further? Sainsf(talk·contribs) 14:44, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
Sorry for the slow response. I think it's pretty much fine to go. DYK tends to be a very uninformed audience, and Category:Species endangered by the pet trade is large and very incomplete, so I was mainly concerned that we avoid giving the false impression that ocelots are domestic animals like a house cat, and can be ethically bought and kept just as easily. Off-wiki, I have heard someone go on about getting an ocelot (and then do more research and decide against it).
Image is now in article, so I've ticked that off. I'd suggest the following modified hook (ALT1) to the promoting reviewer, but if you object, Sainsf, I think the original hook is sufficiently interesting when conjoined with the picture. HLHJ (talk) 19:22, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
ALT1 ... that artist Salvador Dalí claimed his pet ocelot(pictured) was a normal cat that he had "painted over in an op art design"?
@HLHJ: I find this hook more interesting than the original. I see your point about pets, I'll remember that when I further expand the article. And thanks for the edits! Sainsf(talk·contribs) 03:27, 7 January 2020 (UTC)
You know what, may be we should link "cat" to Cat just to avoid confusion with members of Felidae (they are also cats), the ocelot is a felid but not a "cat". Sainsf(talk·contribs) 03:30, 7 January 2020 (UTC)
It's an interesting topic, and I have a bad tendency to edit everything I review; please don't hesitate to reverse any of my edits that you'd like to. HLHJ (talk) 04:56, 7 January 2020 (UTC)
No problem, the edits are nice. The hook seems perfect to me. Sainsf(talk·contribs) 08:21, 7 January 2020 (UTC)
Well, I proposed ALT2, so it's OK by me :)... I think this is ready for promotion. I've modified the template to make it really clear that all the concerns have been addressed. Request promoting reviewer, please... HLHJ (talk) 00:06, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
