John Gosse Freeze

[edit]
  • ... that John Gosse Freeze was on the bar of Columbia County, Pennsylvania, for more than 60 years, retiring only a few years before his death?

Moved to mainspace by Jakec (talk). Self nominated at 13:17, 12 February 2015 (UTC).

  • New article, good length, in policy, QPQ done. Hook short, cited, and verified, though it might benefit from a bit more specific detail to spark interest, perhaps something like:
  • ALT1 ... that John Gosse Freeze was a lawyer for more than sixty years who once defended men who were hung for murder that he thought were innocent? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1bandsaw (talkcontribs) 23:24, 15 March 2015‎ (UTC)
  • New reviewer needed for ALT1 hook; adding sig to initial review. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:34, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
  • I agree that the original hook could be improved, but ALT1 is not accurate – the article says that he thought only one of the defendants was innocent. How about:
  • ALT2: ... that 19th-century American lawyer John Gosse Freeze, who practiced law for over 60 years, received the best education available in his day, including common schools, private schools, and private tutoring?
  • I also have a question about the term "lieutenant colonel" to Governor Bigler. Is this the right title? Yoninah (talk) 21:35, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Also fine with ALT2. From J.H. Beers' book: "He served on Governor Bigler's staff with the rank of lieutenant colonel, by appointment, hence his title". --Jakob (talk) 22:46, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Thank you. Since I can't approve my own hook, new reviewer requested for ALT2. Yoninah (talk) 23:40, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Yoninah, I regret that ALT2 clocks in at 204 characters, which renders it ineligible. It also claims a bit more than the article does, since it was the best educational facilities this region afforded, not the best education available, which could have been elsewhere in the country. I'll be happy to review a new ALT when it's available, and if it could be a bit under 200 characters, so much the better. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:03, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
  • The nominator has expressed a preference to return to his original hook. I say go with that; perhaps delete the part after the comma to keep it snappy. The offline hook ref is AGF and cited inline. Yoninah (talk) 13:03, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
