- ... that the only remaining artifact in the ghost town of Fremont, Oregon, is a juniper stump notched with steps that women travelers used to mount horses in a modest fashion? Source: The Oregon Desert by E. R. Jackman and R. A. Long, see p. 321. It includes a photo of the notched stump. The caption says: "A mounting block is all that is left of the once thriving town of Fremont ... The block is a juniper stump, with steps sawed in it so ladies with long skirts of the day could step into buggies or mount their sidesaddles without exposing their ankles."

New enough and long enough. QPQ present. The book source does not make p321 available, so must AGF. This page required more copyediting than usual; maybe take another look through before nominating pages in the future or even now? Hook is interesting, though, and cited in the article.
