Far West, Austin, Texas

[edit]

5x expanded by Austin-geo (talk). Self-nominated at 15:55, 26 September 2017 (UTC).

  • This article is a five-fold expansion and is new enough and long enough. The hook facts are sourced inline, the article is neutral and I detected no policy issues. No QPQ is needed by this new Wikipedia editor. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:12, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
  • I moved the page and adjusted the DYK credits. Yoninah (talk) 23:49, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
  • I came by to promote this, and did some editing on the article and added a "clarification needed" tag. I think the hook is rather bland. It also uses the same words as the source, which quotes a delicatessen owner. I would think you would cite a more reliable source for such a fact. Also, it would be nice to know just how many Jews live there. Yoninah (talk) 00:28, 29 September 2017 (UTC)
  • Hi, I left a message at the article's talkpage. I believe I clarified the confusion. Let me know if that's not the case. I'm also working on finding a better source, but at the momment I cannot find anything saying that Northwest Hills/FW in itself is the hub for Jewish activity in Austin (other than what I already provided). I also don't know if established real estate pages are reliable too for such a claim, like this one, which says: "Northwest Hills is home to the Dell Jewish Community Center – the city’s most known hub for Jewish learning, worship, and community gatherings." Thought it doesn't directly mention the suburb as being a hub for Jewish activity, it does for the community center, which is in the neighborhood. Austin-geo (talk) 01:06, 29 September 2017 (UTC)
ALT1 "... that Michael Dell founded a Jewish community center in Austin's neighborhood Northwest Hills?"
  • @Austin-geo: I did a little look-around on Google and see that this neighborhood is called "Northwest Hills", with Far West Boulevard being the main street. I think this page should be moved to Northwest Hills (Austin, Texas). I don't understand why you're focusing so much on the Jewish community in your hook. You haven't given so many details about the Jewish community in the article; the part about it having the only eiruv in Austin, as mentioned by the selectaustin.com real estate page, would be good to add here. It's also not clear why you're rating the article C-class when it doesn't have any images.
  • IMO a better hook would be:
  • ALT2: ... that an Austin, Texas newspaper dubbed a swimming pool in Northwest Hills "The Traz", since the middle school next to it resembles the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary? Yoninah (talk) 19:14, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
Far West, being the main street of Northwest Hills, often becomes synonyms with the neighborhood (see here, here, here, here, here). Since most neighborhood articles from Austin are titled "Neighborhood, Austin, Texas", the move to "Northwest Hills, Austin, Texas" is probably best. I'm focusing on the Jewish community because its a main aspect of the neighborhood. I don't have any numbers for the amount of Jewish in the area, but in 2003 it was around 8,000 (according to a Google Book source). The numbers are probably somewhat skewed because non-Jewish people attend the community center for the facilities/other events too, myself included. I'm currently working on getting other sections done, but I plan to expand the Culture section once I'm done with the rest. The article is still formation, so please be patient. I believe it was Cwmhiraeth who changed it to C-Class. I'm not sure what the classes mean yet so I'll leave it up to you guys.
I still like ALT1 the most because it is shorter and covers a more popular attraction of the area. We can let the reviewer decide what he/she wants. Austin-geo (talk) 02:05, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
  • OK, I'll move the page to Northwest Hills (Austin, Texas) and adjust the DYK credit line. I had the feeling you were involved with the Jewish community there; it comes across in the writing. BTW if you are able to take some pictures of the area and of the Jewish community center, it would really enhance the article.
  • Since I'm re-reviewing the article now, I'm the one who will give it the final approval, so no need for a "re-review" icon. From my years of working at DYK, I can tell you that ALT1 is not going to attract many hits. The idea is to "hook" the reader with an intriguing fact that will make them click on the article. You can spotlight the Jewish community in your hook, but make it a hooky hook! Yoninah (talk) 11:25, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
  • Thank you for clarifying. I desperately want to take pictures of the area, but the camera quality on my phone is pretty bad. Yesterday I took a picture of the "Far West Boulevard" exit/entry sign from Loop 1 – I realized immediately that I needed a better camera. The residential area has a lot of trees and mountains (which means differences in lighting), so I'll definitely need to bring a better camera if I want to go around taking pictures. I added a picture on Wikipedia yesterday and it is now in the neighborhood box. I followed the licensing format from another user who had uploaded a picture of Circle C Ranch. Please advise on what else you need from me. Best, Austin-geo (talk) 13:39, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
  • @Austin-geo: 1. Please let me know when you're finished expanding the article. 2. Please let me know which hook you want to use. You could make ALT1 hooky by adding some details, like:
  • ALT1a ... that the Northwest Hills neighborhood of Austin, Texas, includes a 40-acre complex founded by the chief executive officer of Dell, housing Jewish community centers, synagogues, and schools? (But I still vote for ALT2 if you want to get a lot more hits) Yoninah (talk) 17:11, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah: Hello. I'm done expanding the article. I just need to add some info on the deer population in the neighborhood and some toll road problems (Northwest Hills residents cannot see the fee board while going south on Loop 1 from Far West Blvd). But these should be minor updates that I probably won't get a chance to complete till the end of the week. I support whichever hook you prefer. Thank you for your help and suggestions. Austin-geo (talk) 17:07, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
  • @Austin-geo: OK, thanks. It looks very good. I read through the article and added some links, a conversion template, and other editing. Thanks for fixing up the Physical geography section. One last thing: the Insider's Guide to Austin only has 435 or so pages, but you're citing something on page 618. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 18:21, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
  • I removed the page numbers from the bibliography section. Do you know how to create a URL that will link directly to the page in question? In Google Books, search on the name of the book plus some of the wording on that page. This will take you to a URL that includes the page number. Delete everything after the page number–this is the URL to use. Yoninah (talk) 18:26, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
  • I believe I just fixed it right now. Let me know if I did it right. Thanks a lot, Austin-geo (talk) 18:33, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
We're ready! But unfortunately, I can't review my own hook suggestion. I'd like to call on another reviewer to decide between ALT1, ALT1a, and ALT2. Pinging @Cwmhiraeth:. Yoninah (talk) 18:45, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
  • All the hooks are satisfactory but I suggest going with ALT1a. I rated the article as C-class at an earlier stage when I found it was rated as a stub. It is much more comprehensive than most start class articles. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:13, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
  • The article has been tagged for unreliable sources and is currently undergoing a major edit/trimming. I suggest waiting on promotion until the issues are sorted out. Yoninah (talk) 20:32, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
  • @Austin-geo: there's no need for a hasty withdrawal on your part. Just because the article is being trimmed down to meet Wikipedia guidelines doesn't mean it shouldn't appear on the main page, where it will get lots of page views. Please keep CALM and let's see where the article is holding in another week or so. Yoninah (talk) 13:22, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
  • The article is clearly promotional, cites real estate websites rather than reliable sources and has the look of paid editing. Please withdraw it for good. Smallbones(smalltalk) 15:28, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
Smallbones - Thank you for exercising good faith. Per WP:RS, "Journalistic and academic sources are preferable, however, and e-commerce links should be replaced with non-commercial reliable sources if available ... Questionable sources (i.e. promotional, as mentioned a sentence before) are generally unsuitable for citing contentious claims ..." Which means real estate sources, though not "preferable", are fine if used with cautious. You might as well read WP:PROMOTIONAL, "An article can report objectively about such things, as long as an attempt is made to describe the topic from a neutral point of view", which I believe I have. Before accusing me of paid editing, read the article's talkpage. Austin-geo (talk) 15:37, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
Stop wikilawyering. You need to listen to what editors are saying to you without attacking them. What they are saying is essentially "you are promoting the subject of the article", "you are using inappropriate sources", and I'll add "you have every appearance of an undisclosed paid editor." Smallbones(smalltalk) 17:37, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
How did I attack you? BTW, you just ignored the policies I posted. Austin-geo (talk) 18:14, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
  • The article is still being edited and still meets DYK start-class criteria, so replacing tick until everything is sorted out. Yoninah (talk) 18:15, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
  • The last major deletions of text were made on October 10 and October 20. I think it's safe to say that what's left is well-sourced and will remain. @Cwmhiraeth: could you restore your tick for ALT1a (since I wrote the hook)? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 21:49, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
  • Restoring tick for ALT1a. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:08, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
