Effects of Hurricane Irma in the British Virgin Islands

[edit]

Created by Legis (talk). Self-nominated at 19:32, 8 June 2018 (UTC).

  • Article is new enough and long enough. There are a lot of sourcing problems:
  • Source needed for the islands that Irma made landfall/direct hit on.
  • Not seeing how source #6 supports the article content.
  • The paragraph about Anegada needs a source.
  • Same for the one that describes the timecourse of Irma's transit.
  • I am not sure that all of the content of the "in the aftermath" paragraph is supported by the source.
  • #19 does not explicitly link the death rate to Irma.
  • I am dubious that LinkedIn is a good source for anything.
  • "None of the banks" paragraph needs a source.
  • "assisted the pressure on providing emergency accommodation" is an odd wording.
  • The number of 150 released prisoners is not supported by the source, and neither is the claim of a deliberate release.
  • "Prisoners were instructed to return to the prison at a later date. Perhaps unsurprisingly, not all of them did so. Although exact numbers were never provided, the authorities indicated that a number of the prisoners surrendered themselves voluntarily after checking on their families." also does not seem to be sourced and "Perhaps unsurprisingly" sounds like editorializing.
  • Last sentence of that paragraph needs a source as does "Accordingly, the relief and recovery efforts had to be coordinated from a conference room in Peebles Hospital.".
  • I am not sure if the Express is a good source for any looting related claim, and the source for the preceding sentence says nothing about what was being looted.
  • "Subsequent weather events" paragraph needs sources.
  • Sources #34 and #36 which are the same need to clarify where the info is found.
  • #37 says nothing about the premier.
  • "or approximately 5% of the population" and the last sentence of that paragraph needs a source.
  • The whole curfew paragraph needs more sourcing, as the only source proffered seems to only cover part of the information.
  • Source #41 does not support some of the numbers.
  • Source #43 does not support all the claims.
  • Source #50 appears to be circular.
  • Source #52 does not support the content, it seems like it is synthesis.
No copyvio or plagiarism that I can see. Hook #2 is more interesting but it needs a better source. Images OK. No QPQ needed. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 10:12, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, Jo-Jo Eumerus. All very useful and constructive. Being realistic, I am not going to have time to address all of those issues in anything kind of short to medium term timeframe. A lot of the sourcing issues arise because I started with recording key recollections from my own experiences, and then worked backwards to find sources to back-fill. But in terms of the DYK nomination, again - being realistic - I think it is probably just easier to scratch this one and push on with nominations from better sourced articles. Thanks. --Legis (talk - contribs) 12:11, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
  • @Jo-Jo Eumerus: it has been one month since the last comments on this nomination. The nominator seemed to indicate that he wanted to withdraw it. A different editor has made some edits to the page since then. Have your sourcing concerns been addressed? If not, I will close this nomination as unsuccessful. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 23:51, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I am in agreement with closing it as unsuccessful. --Legis (talk - contribs) 17:00, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
