Chanbria

[edit]
  • ... that juvenile Chanbria solifuges use their legs and chelicerae to dig for prey beneath the sand? Source: "Their search was often interrupted by a quick, short retreat along their previous path, immediately followed by a vigorous excavation of the sand with their 2nd and perhaps also 1st pair of legs and chelicerae, creating a shallow bowl under the crust of the sand. [...] [O]ne specimen was seen to excavate a hemipteran nymph from just under the surface of the sand" [1]
    • ALT1:... that juvenile Chanbria solifuges use their pedipalps to feel for prey beneath the surface of sand? Source: "Some individuals dug for only a few seconds, while others paused, probed the hole with their pedipalps, and then immediately began digging again for a variable number of times until they began their search for another patch of sand to excavate[...]; our observations of juvenile Chanbria support the use of pedipalps for tactile detection of prey." ibid.
    • ALT2:... that arachnologists think juvenile Chanbria solifuges locate their prey with both chemical and tactile signals. Source: "Our observations suggest that juvenile Chanbria may use a combination of tactile and chemical cues to locate prey that are buried just beneath the surface of the sand." ibid.
    • ALT3:... that solifuges like those in the genus Chanbria have five pairs of fan-shaped chemoreceptors (malleoli) on their back legs, each with the dendrites of 72,000 sensory neurons? Source: Five malleoli extend ventrally from the proximal segments of each hind leg of mature and immature solpugids. Each malleolus contains the denrites of 72,000 bipolar sensory neurons with somata in a ganglion in the leg just dorsal to the malleolus. ... Only solpugids of he the genus Chanbria were used in these studies" [2]: 471

  • This article is new enough and long enough. The article is neutral and I detected no copyright or close paraphrasing issues. Looking at the proposed hooks, I think ALT3 is not of general interest to non-biologists so I have struck it. You will need to use "pedipalp" in the article if you want to use it in the hook. Personally, I would substitute "mouthparts" for "chelicerae" in ALT0, and use touch and smell in the others instead of the more technical words. Also most people won't know what solifuges are so why not use "spiders"? DYK also requires an inline citation at the end of the actual sentence concerned rather than at the end of the paragraph (which is perfectly satisfactory for other purposes). @Cwmhiraeth: I think I've made the required changed in the article by adding more in-line citations and explicitly mentioning pedipalps. As for the hooks, your changes make sense, although I think I'd prefer to say "camel spider" (or "wind scorpion" or "sun spider") as solifuges aren't in the order Araneae. I've pipelinked chelicerae to read "mouth parts", but perhaps it could also read "jaws" or link to Arthropod mouthparts#Chelicerates. New alts as per your suggestions:
  • ALT4:... that juvenile Chanbria camel spiders use their legs and jaws to dig for prey beneath the sand?
  • ALT5:... that arachnologists think juvenile Chanbria camel spiders locate their prey through a combination of smelling and feeling for them?
  • ALT6:... that juvenile Chanbria camel spiders use their pedipalps to feel for prey beneath the surface of sand?
Thanks! Umimmak (talk) 22:28, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
@Umimmak: Wouldn't it be better to call them "camel spiders" rather than "spider camels"? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:00, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
@Cwmhiraeth: it absolutely would be; I have no clue why I wrote it incorrectly in the hooks. Thank you for catching that. New hooks have been fixed. Umimmak (talk) 20:10, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Approving ALT4, ALT5 and ALT6. The promoter can choose which they like. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:20, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
