Carl Wolfgang Benjamin Goldschmidt, Minimal surface of revolution
[edit]( Back to T:TDYK )
( Article history links: )
- ... that a minimal surface of revolution can be visualized as soap film stretched between two circular wires, and Carl Wolfgang Benjamin Goldschmidt discovered mathematical solutions describing cases in which the soap film breaks?
- Reviewed: Vanguard Cave
- Comment: I'm aware the above hook is slightly longer than 200 characters; however, this is a hook for two separate articles, each with a really long title. If necessary, the hook could be shortened thus, by taking out a few words and using Goldschmidt's initials:
- ... that a minimal surface of revolution can be visualized as soap film stretched between two wires, and C. W. B. Goldschmidt discovered mathematical solutions in which the film breaks?

- Length, creation date, and sourcing all check out. I'm not fond of using MathWorld as a source, and for the minimal surface of revolution one it's the only source for about half of the text; see e.g. this book for what looks like better sourcing on the Goldschmidt solution. Nevertheless, I think the sourcing is already adequate for DYK purposes. —David Eppstein (talk) 01:23, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
