Bilihildis

[edit]

18th c. image of Saint Bilihildis

  • ... that while her pagan husband was away, Bilihildis (pictured) got on a ship, sailed to Mainz, and started an abbey?
  • ... that depictions of Bilihildis's (pictured) life follow a scheme common for saints in Merovingian times?

Created by Drmies (talk). Self nominated at 03:56, 14 October 2014 (UTC).

  • OK in timing length and sources, the lit lists boasts more as is cited actually. OK for DYK. Serten (talk) 16:44, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
  • @Serten: I came by to promote hooks and am unclear as to what you mean by "OG" or by the second half of your comment. Did you also check for close paraphrasing? Yoninah (talk) 22:06, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
Ah sorry, the article mentions a lot of sources but basically uses only the Brigitte flug text. I havent registered a copyvio per se, but the sources in the literature list are mere boasting. OK? Serten (talk) 22:36, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
Ahem, Serten, "mere boasting"? Are you kidding? Every single entry in the bibliography is used in the citations. I disagree with the absoluteness of the "basically uses only" statement, but it is a fact that hers is the most comprehensive and up-to-date discussion of the saint--what do you want me to do about it? Yoninah, Flug's is a German text so I don't know if that changes anything, but I'd like to get this show on the road. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 19:20, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Since the review did not cover all the DYK criteria, and since all the sources save one are in German, I'd like to call on a German-speaking reviewer to look this over for neutrality and close paraphrasing. I'm pinging User:Gerda Arendt. Yoninah (talk) 20:08, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
Interesting article, much more detailed and careful than the German, good historic sources. As we know nothing for sure about her, with all accounts written after her death, the first hook would profit from something like "is supposed to have". The second needs a duplication of the ref right after the fact, to follow teh rulez. I wonder about "pictured" if we mention depictions, seems awkward. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:00, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the review, Gerda. Yeah, I don't much like the ALT hook, though I appreciate Serten's effort. I think DYKs will allow us to do away with niceties such as "according to the only real versions of her life that we have, written hundreds of years after the fact, supposedly she got on a ship...". I don't mind letting Yoninah or BlueMoonset be the judge of that, but I do like economy. Drmies (talk) 22:49, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
  • ALT2: ... that sources say that while her pagan husband was away, Bilihildis (pictured) got on a ship, sailed to Mainz, and started an abbey?
  • Thanks, Gerda! I added "supposedly" to the hook that's cited and verified, and struck through the second hook. I agree with you about the image, and struck that from the hook, too. Thanks for the quick work! Yoninah (talk) 23:27, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
  • My remark about pictured was only for ALT1. I restored the original hook which is the best and made your version of it ALT2. The "supposedly" needs to include the "while" clause IF used, and most people get on a ship before they sail, for example (improvements welcome):
  • ALT3: ... that sources say that Bilihildis (pictured) sailed to Mainz while her pagan husband was away, and started an abbey? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 00:03, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
  • For native English speakers, ALT2 is hookier. Yoninah (talk) 00:22, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
  • but sounds is if we know for sure that he was away, - and there's no reason not to have the standard "pictured", --Gerda Arendt (talk) 00:50, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Sorry, I was having trouble understanding your directions. I restored (pictured) to ALT2, and put that phrase, "that sources say" before the hook, deleting "supposedly". I just think that ALT2 reads more smoothly with the action clauses ("got on ... sailed ... started") coming one after another. Yoninah (talk) 09:28, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
The Alt2 hook here, as the general approach about (Christian) legends on DYK is overcautious and seems to be based on typical "sceptical movement" prejudices and partisanship. Compare instead Piganino - the instrumement's very existence is more in doubt than Bilhildis, but nobody asks to provide disclaimers or warning signs to the hook. Serten (talk) 13:09, 24 October 2014 (UTC) PS.: I am german btw.
repeated. This is for the original (seems best to me), ALT2 and ALT3 (more "correct" but more clumsy). Up to the prep builder and the hook improvers. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:44, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
more ALT suggestions
  • ALT4: ... that sources say that while her pagan husband was away, Bilihildis (pictured) run away from home and started an abbey in Mainz? Hafspajen (talk) 21:07, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt ? Hafspajen (talk) 21:09, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the offer, but sailing seems more interesting (and sourced). We have almost more than enough choices ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:21, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
I didn't meant that she was running, litterary. Run away - that is a saying. >Running away from home can be done by bicycle, buss, horse or boat ....Hafspajen (talk) 23:08, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
Alt 5... that while her ignorant husband was away, Bilihildis (pictured) is said to to have got on a ship, sailed to Mainz, and started an abbey?
Alt 6 ... that while her allegedly faith challenged handfastingpartnershippartner was away, the allegedly Bilihildis (alleged picture) called person is said by some sources of unknown sustainability assessement, to have got on a alternative-energy driven ship, used a carbon-free travel to what was called later Mainz by middle-European postnationalists and Mayence by Frog-eating-and-soon-after-cheese-eating-surrender-bonobos, and started a women-only place of worship where Have a Ramahanakwanzmas is being sung on winter solstice?
Sorry but this hook-proving business gets ridiculous. Serten (talk) 04:58, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
Sex is ridiculous - as always - but great fun too. Hafspajen (talk) 14:41, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
It may refer as well to hook-proving, but I doubt Statler and Waldorf get that difference anymore ;) Serten (talk) 20:53, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
