- ... that Bachtiar Djafar was the first mayor of Medan, Indonesia to be of Malay descent? Source: [1], p67, or [2], p111

Created by Juxlos (talk). Self-nominated at 17:12, 30 March 2023 (UTC). Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Bachtiar Djafar; consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.
- Article is long enough (1,640 characters) and new enough (moved to mainspace on day of nomination). It appears generally well-sourced. The hook fact is interesting and sourced inline. The citation for the hook fact is a foreign language book, which I would typically AGF. However in this case, I have a slight concern: it says it was published in March 1990, and is supporting something from April 1990. Is that just because he was sworn in on 2 April 1990, and in March 1990, it was already known he was going to become mayor? Could you please provide the Indonesian language text from the source, and the English translation for me to verify? Harrias (he/him) • talk 21:56, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
- The relevant line is: "Gubernur Sumatera Utara Raja Inal Siregar pada tanggal 2 April 1990 […] telah melantik Kolonel Bachtiar Djafar (51 th) menjadi Walikota Medan". Translated to "Governor of North Sumatra Raja Inal Siregar on 2 April 1990 […] had sworn in Colonel Bachtiar Djafar (51) as mayor of Medan." The language clearly puts the swearing in past tense, so I think it’s just Google Books taking the wrong date, or the magazine is published with a delay. Juxlos (talk) 01:38, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
