Template:Cite Josephus/doc

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This template allows the works of Flavius Josephus published in the Project on Ancient Cultural Engagement (PACE), the Perseus Project, and the Loeb Classical Library to be cited in one citation statement. It is essentially a wrapper for the {{PACEJ}}, {{LOEBJ}} and {{Perseus}} templates.

Numbering systems

[edit]

There are two major systems for numbering the works of Josephus. William Whiston used Book, Chapter, and Paragraph numbers, whereas Benedikt Niese's system used in Loeb Classical Library uses Book and Section numbers. Sometimes Whiston's paragraph numbers are also referred to as section numbers.

Catholic Biblical Quarterly's guidelines on citing Josephus state: "A complete reference to Josephus should conclude with the paragraph number(s) in the Niese system, preceded by §: Josephus B.J. 2.8.13 §160; neither the Niese number alone (e.g., Josephus B.J. §160) nor the Niese number with partial omission of what should precede (e.g., Josephus B.J. 2.8 §160 or 2.8.160) is sufficient."[citation needed]

Documentation

[edit]

{{PACEJ}}

[edit]

This is an external link template to the books of Flavius Josephus on the Project on Ancient Cultural Engagement (PACE) website. The site contains works and resources on Josephus from Brill Publishers, and is edited by Professor Steve Mason. Included are the ancient Greek texts, William Whiston's public-domain English translations, and new English translations by Mason and others.

The template currently links to the parallel English-English interface, Brill's on the left and Whiston's on the right. The Brill translations always present prominently, and the site defaults to the paragraph numbers by Niese, but it is possible to browse by Whiston's.

Usage

[edit]
{{PACEJ|text=|bookno=|chap=|sec=}}

All except chap are required.

  • text - Work cited. To define a work, use
wars, bj, BJ, or JW - The Jewish War
ants anti, aj, or AJ - Antiquities of the Jews
vita, vj, VJ, life or Life - The Life of Flavius Josephus
apion, aa, AA or CA - Against Apion
  • bookno - original, common to all editions.
  • chap - Whiston chapter number, sets the template to present a Whiston citation style, overriding the default Niese style.
  • sec - Section number. used for either Niese or Whiston numbers (the latter together with chap).

Deprecated parameters

{{Perseus}}

[edit]

This is an external link template to works on the Perseus Project website.

Usage

[edit]

Navigate to a text page at the Perseus Project website. At the top right of the text, there is a box with a shorthand citation of the part of the work that you are viewing. Use the information in the citation for the three parameters of the template, replacing the spaces with the vertical bar symbol ("|").

The three parameters go in the url of the link, and only the second and third are displayed:

  • [http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc={{{1}}}+{{{2}}}+{{{3}}} {{{2}}}{{{3}}}]

Example

[edit]

At http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0218%3Abook%3D10%3Acard%3D1, the box on the top right of the text shows the shorthand citation Hom. Od. 10.1. To link to the page with the {{Perseus}} template, type

"{{Perseus|Hom.|Od.|10.1}}".

Result:

"Perseus Project Od.10.1".
