Description

[edit]

A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature is out of copyright due to its age. Its content can be copied verbatim into a Wikipedia article providing that the text meets Wikipedia policies and guidelines (see "Copying material from free sources" in the plagiarism guideline). The plagiarism guideline requires that suitable attribution is provided if content is copied from a public domain source (see the section "Copying material from free sources").

{{SBDEL}} (or {{A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature}}) is a special case of the template {{cite SBDEL}} because it provides the attribution requested in the plagiarism guideline. So use {{SBDEL}} only if text has been copied from A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature; otherwise, use the {{cite SBDEL}} template.

Usage

[edit]

This template should be placed either as an inline citation (see WP:CITE), or in the References section (see WP:APPENDIX) of a Wikipedia article that contains text copied from A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature

If an SBDEL article exists onWikisource (see Wikisource:A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature) then use the |wstitle=article name parameter for example

{{SBDEL|wstitle=Abbott, Jacob}} produces:
Wikisource reference This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainCousin, John William (1910). "Abbott, Jacob". A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature. London: J. M. Dent & Sons – via Wikisource.

If there is no SBDEL article on Wikisource then use the |title=article name parameter for example

{{SBDEL|title=Abbott, Jacob}} produces:
Wikisource reference This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainCousin, John William (1910). "Abbott, Jacob". A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature. London: J. M. Dent & Sons – via Wikisource.

In the past the template could be used with no parameter this however is deprecated, always add an SBDEL article name, because without an SBDEL name a reader might need to check many articles to find the relevant one and the template would not meet the requirements of the verification policy "Cite the source clearly, ideally giving page number(s) – though sometimes a section, chapter, or other division may be appropriate instead".

This template accepts any parameters that {{cite wikisource}} does, except for |wslink=, |plaintitle=, and |year=.
