Taungup, Toungup, or Toungok (Burmese: တောင်ကုတ်မြို့) is the principal town of the Taungup Township in Rakhine State in the westernmost part of Myanmar. The population is 28,652 as of 2014, while Taungup Township's population is 114,437.[1] Taungup is the location of Taungup University, one of two universities in Rakhine.[2]
Taungup received 29.1 inches of rainfall on 21 July 2011, a record breaking amount that caused severe flooding.[3][4]
During the Myanmar civil war, the Arakan Army attacked the town, causing clashes around the Taungup University.[5] On 14 December 2024, AA captured the town.[6]
