Tate Johnson (born July 10, 2005) is an American soccer player who plays for Vancouver Whitecaps FC in Major League Soccer.
Early life
[edit]Johnson played youth soccer with Tampa Bay United.[1]
College career
[edit]In 2024, Johnson began attending the University of North Carolina, where he played for the men's soccer team.[2] He made his debut on August 22 against the UAB Blazers.[3] On October 8, 2024, he scored his first collegiate goal in a match against the Charleston Cougars.[4] At the end of the season, he was named to the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team.[5]
Club career
[edit]In 2021 and 2022, Johnson played with Tampa Bay United in USL League Two.[6][7]
In April 2022, Johnson signed a USL Academy contract with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the USL Championship to enable him to play for the first team at the professional level.[8] He made his debut on April 5, 2022, in a U.S. Open Cup match against The Villages SC.[9] In February 2023, he signed another USL Academy contract with the Rowdies.[10][11]
Later in 2023, he moved to Crown Legacy FC in MLS Next Pro.[citation needed]
In 2024, he once again played with Tampa Bay United in USL League Two.[12]
Ahead of the 2025 MLS SuperDraft, Johnson signed a Generation Adidas contract with Major League Soccer.[13] He was then selected the first round (15th overall) by Vancouver Whitecaps FC.[14]
