Visiting the Ethnografic Center in Zlatograd

[edit]

Zlatograd Ethnografic Center is a tourist attraction comprised of craftsmen some of whom show thier wares throughout Europe. Visiting in the summer of 2010 I visited shops that were truly excellent and some that were truly tourist. I purchased some handmade wooden objects that were great finds from a shop where I could watch the craftsman working. Looking in a shop that had horse tack it was obvious that it was not usable-just decoration. And that craftsman agreed! He made it for the tourists-but would be happy to make the real stuff on order as he does for the locals. Overall, the center was one of the best tourist places I visited in Bulgaria and the best for handmade crafts. There are several restaurants in the centers area that not only have good food but traditional as well. One coffee shop makes coffee the old fashioned way-really old fashioned. Not just using hot sand to boil it but the server places the coffee cups on an antique tray designed for the task of spinning in a circle to settle the grounds and spins it at your table. By the way, Zlatograd means Gold City-and was so named for growing tobacco.
