Rape conviction

[edit]

Bebo Kobo was convicted of rape in 1979 as these reliable sources show [1], [2] [3] . I did not find sources in English. I am adding this to the article. בשלני (talk) 17:11, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

THIS IS NOT CORRECT, NO SOURCES — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.81.218.180 (talk) 16:20, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The sources say explicitly that he was convicted of rape. בשלני (talk) 11:39, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The sources say explicitly that he was convicted of rape. This is completely not true and should be removed from Wikipedia. Untouchebal person (talk) 07:42, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This issue seems to resurface from time-to-time. The articles linked to above are all from reliable Israeli sources, namely Globes, Haaretz, and Calcalist. But they are all in Hebrew, so I have had to rely on Google Translate, and the nuances may well be lost on me. As far as I can puzzle it out, Kobo was convicted of rape in 1979, and sentenced to 18 months in prison. However, the three articles whilst they cover that, are perhaps more about the lawsuit resulting from about a 2005 article in People newspaper (unclear what publication People really is) that stated that his real name was something else and that he had 1988 drug trafficking conviction, and that Kobo was suing People for defamation. It appears that in 2007 a court agreed to Kobo's request to delete mention of the rape conviction from the defence brief, but a higher court reversed this, and the case was awaiting a Supreme Court ruling. Perhaps the main policy to consider here is WP:BLPCRIME, but Kobo (then aged 28) has had an 18 month sentence for rape, then it is not merely an allegation, and we can include it. The thoughts of others, especially Hebrew speakers, would be most appreciated. I will cross-post this to Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard Edwardx (talk) 18:21, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, I can read Hebrew. These articles are reporting on a case between the newspaper "People" and Kobo. Kobo does not deny the rape allegations, he says בבקשה שהגיש קובו לשופט ברוך למחיקת הטענות בעניין האונס מכתב ההגנה, נטען כי ההרשעה באונס התיישנה ואף נמחקה ביולי 2000, כך שאזכור הרשעה שנמחקה בכתב הגנה אינו קביל בהליך משפטי. which translates to In Kobo's request to judge Baruch to erase the rape allegations from the defense statements, he claims that the rape conviction reached the statute of limitations and has been erased in July of 2002, so any mention of it in the defense statement isn't legal in the proceeding. So the sources do confirm this. Here is the court case [4] (of the above mentioned, not the rape one). Here is a lawyer's coverage of the above case [5] from the Israel Bar Association. Gonnym (talk) 17:06, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Gonnym. Based on this and discussion at Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard#Bebo Kobo, we should be including the rape conviction. Regardless of whether Kobo himself chooses to call it an allegation, we should correctly describe as what it is, namely a conviction. Edwardx (talk) 18:26, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Eliezer "Bebo" Kobo is an Israeli business tycoon and property developer. Chairman and CEO of property conglomerate Camden Market Holdings & Developments, Stanley Sidings, and Stables Market Property Group.

Career

Bebo Kobo is a recognized property developer in London, England as well as internationally. He has been the single driving force in the development of Camden Town over the last two decades, binging it to its iconic status. Camden Town is Europe's 2nd largest tourist attraction. [1]

Bebo is the majority shareholder of Camden Market Holdings, a property conglomerate. Properties include Camden Market, Stables Market, Camden Lock Village and Developments. Roughly 9 acres of Freehold property in Central London, the largest property owner in Camden Town. In March of 2014, he sold a large piece of his holdings to fellow Israeli billionaire Teddy Sagi for $664 million. [2] [3] [4]

Prior to purchasing Camden Markets and properties, Bebo owned a similar market in Miami Florida for a number of years, Opa Lacka Flea Market. With over 4,000 tenants on an 80 Acre site, the market was supported by the Florida House of Representatives. The property was later sold to Hong Kong billionaire Li Kai Shing for $120 million. [5] [6]

Far from property and market developments, Bebo began his career in the textile and fashion industry in early 1970's and 1980's. Based out of Hong Kong, he employed over 15,000 employees and his business spanned across Asia to the United States, while being one of the firs foreigners to pioneer the Chinese textile industry.

Non of Kobo's businesses are represented here, the man sold nearly $1 billion worth of his properties and his fortune his left out here. Camden Markets ($680 million), Opa Locka Flea Market ($120M), his garment businesses in the 80's nearly $300 million, non of this is depicted.

I see many sources that you publish here without understanding that it was 30 years ago and that you are trying to prove that they are all accurate, it feels like everyone believes the newspapers. There are rules in Wikipedia which state that such cases should have more accurate information from the court or some supporting documents, not your worthless headlines from the newspapers from 2005-2007. I'm not trying to justify someone, I just don't understand how Someone outsider and not known to anyone, can put up whatever he wants on the page of any person?

If there is anyone here who can provide an accurate document on the court proceedings and give its data, so that I can contact him and resolve this issue already as it should be, through the court. Or the local critics only know how to be anonymous and spoil the reputation of others. This case is 30 years old and all sources older than my source, where the same newspaper People from which you take the same information, was introduced and closed after publication. The source is here: https://b.walla.co.il/item/1216785

People accused of crime:https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:BLPCRIME

Let's think about our rights and protect ourselves from people who today or tomorrow will do the same to you as they did here with this person who is already 70 years old. I would very much like volunteers or administrators to take this a little more seriously and delete this information once and for all from the Personal Life section. Article title

[edit]

User:משה בן משה has moved the article from Bebo Kobo to Zari Kovo, with the explanation that that is his real name. However, this "real name" is not cited in the article, and the sources in the article and elsewhere overwhelmingly call him "Bebo Kobo". If there is anything in reliable sources to back up "Zari Kovo" being his real name, then we should include that in the article, but Zari Kovo should redirect to Bebo Kobo, not vice-versa. Edwardx (talk) 12:22, 9 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No response. Does anyone object to moving the article back to Bebo Kobo? (with a redirect from Zari Kovo of course) Edwardx (talk) 17:46, 12 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think that we should keep the real name. Kovo is a grown man (aged 70) to be called by his youth nickname... Please see here for example. Ovedc (talk) 07:52, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Zari Kovo is the name he is known. I understand that this is also stated in his passport. I think that the other names should be deleted. רונ123 (talk) 10:45, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is true. I fixed it. The name should appear and not the nickname.Linoy1988 (talk) 21:15, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Changes

[edit]

As published in link 13, the article from the Globes website, dated 17.12.2007 in which the judge Dr. Kobi Vardi ruled that "the conviction should be seen as a conviction that has been deleted and the convict will be considered as if he had not been convicted. According to him, evidence that reveals an expunged conviction will not be admissible." I emphasize that the judge's decision refers to a specific charge from 1979. I will also note that the article from 2007 refers to another lawsuit dealing with defamation. As stated in the article: Kobo filed a lawsuit for NIS 10 million against the newspaper People for publishing defamation. This follows an article published in November 2005 in a newspaper about Bohdana, entitled "She caught a shark". According to Kobo, as part of the article, false things were published about him, including that his real name is Victor Atia and that he served prison time for drug offenses. Finally, the lawsuit ended in a compromise. The reporters and editors of the newspaper apologized for defamation and the publication of the article and even the rights to the newspaper were transferred to him. Here is a link to the article from Haaretz newspaper, including clear references. https://www.haaretz.co.il/misc/2008-01-02/ty-article/0000017f-e8a2-dea7-adff-f9fbd15b0000 In addition, link #14 is not relevant to the article and does not refer to the court's decision - therefore it has been removed. Also - the rapist tag was removed in Israel due to the court's decision. I would like to respect the clear decision of the Israeli court. Thank you. BenRoss79 (talk) 20:54, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This has already been discussed at length above, and your change will be reverted. Edwardx (talk) 21:09, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't agree with you? If you read the attached reference you will understand that the judge's decision is unequivocal. Therefore, whoever corrected the entry did a thorough job here. I think he is right. Thank you. Happy New Year.Linoy1988 (talk) 21:23, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Sir, I also think you are wrong and violating a decision of an Israeli court. Do you have legal authority to appeal a court decision in Israel?
As I read in the conversation of BenRoss79, I respect the judge's decision and also in the article from the Globes website, dated 12.17.2007 in which the judge Dr. Kobi Vardi ruled that:" יש לראות את ההרשעה כהרשעה שנמחקה והמורשע ייחשב כאילו לא הורשע. לדבריו, ראיה שיש בה גילוי הרשעה שנמחקה, לא תהיה קבילה". I will also note that the article from 2007 refers to another lawsuit dealing with defamation against KOVO and he won there as well.
See the judge's summary. Here is an exact quote from the article from the Haaretz newspaper. https://www.haaretz.co.il/misc/2008-01-02/ty-article/0000017f-e8a2-dea7-adff-f9fbd15b0000 . How can you ignore the decision of 2 Israeli judges? Here is a quote from the article:"ככל הנראה, לאור פסק הדין של השופט ורדי והפסדו של קובו בסיבוב הראשון, הגיעו הצדדים לפשרה לפיה העורך והכתבים מתנצלים על הפגיעה בשמו הטוב של קובו, מאשרים כי המידע שהובא בכתבה אודות קובו אינו אמת ומבקשים את סליחתו על הפגיעה בשמו הטוב.
Therefore, and in light of the fact that many people have responded here in conversations over the years and supported my opinion, I have reverted the changes and respectfully ask that you not make changes unless the Wikipedia legal department approves it. Thank you very much for understanding.GreatGerg (talk) 16:03, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think your explanation is accurate. And I believe that the deletion you made is correct and justified both legally and ethically. I support the opinion that the charge should be deleted from the page.BenRoss79 GreatGregLinoy1988 (talk) 11:06, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I also support the deletion of the charges from 40 years ago. My mother's language is Hebrew and I know how the Israeli media works. I think one of the members here may have translated the articles incorrectly. I read all the references, including BenRoss79 and added the exact quotes. I think the charges should be deleted according to the decision of the Israeli court.GreatGerg (talk) 15:13, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
