The then Don Smith is, I believe, the first NBA player to whom the term "power forward" was applied in the NBA. Naturally there were what we retrospectively call power forwards (Bob Petit and many etc.) long before he played, but I recall seeing him interviewed by, iirc, Jack Twyman on an ABC broadcast in what I believe must have been the '69-'70 season (I'm sure he was a Buck, and for his other season as a Buck, '68-'69, Basketball Reference (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/abdulza01.html ) lists him as a center) and he was quite jazzed to have the then newly invented term applied to him Andyvphil (talk) 11:19, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds plausible. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a print or electronic source to use as a supporting reference. Googling around, there's reference made to the term "power forward" becoming associated with Maurice Lucas in the second half of the 1970s, and another reference to Luke Jackson of the 76ers (but this may be one of the retrospective attributions you mentioned) . . . but nothing definitive on the origins of the term. — Myasuda (talk) 13:13, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
