Microscope or telescope

[edit]

In the article twice a microscope Actually it shows that maybe he invented the telescope, but he definitly invented the microscope. !Ramen! (Ramakae) (talk) 15:03, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Priority

[edit]

Jansen is claimed in his article as the creator of the telescope, possibly preceded only by Hans Lippershey. The link to Lippershey not only doesn't mention Jansen, but says that Jacob Metius may have invented the telescope around the same time, but was beaten to the patent application by Lippershey. All of the articles imply that the device may have been previously known. These guys were credited just because they were the first to file for patents. What's the real story? If the telescope was created, perhaps as a toy, by some anonymous inventor and then publicized by someone who later got the publicity, the article should say that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.174.150.42 (talk) 09:52, 27 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling

[edit]

Sacharias or Zacharias. The page entry is Sacharias. Many sources spell it Zacharias. Discuss. Ando228 (talk) 01:30, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Needs a WP:GOOGLETEST. This article should not have the name Sacharias with an intro Zacharias. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 15:35, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Google book test show "Sacharias Jansen" 74 results, "Sacharias Janssen" 292 results, "Zacharias Jansen" 2,720 results, "Zacharias Janssen" 2,390 results. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 18:31, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dutch spelling has changed considerably between the 1500s and now. S was often used in the past where Z is used now, for example the word "zijn" in modern Dutch was often written "syn" in Janssen's day. Janssen is (I think) the more common spelling these days. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2corner (talkcontribs) 10:21, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Death

[edit]

In the article it says that he must have died before 1632 yet his death on the right side is 1638 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.206.163.33 (talk) 02:58, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move

[edit]
The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was move to Zacharias Janssen. The Z issue is clear. The single or double ess is not far from a toss up between the comments below but limiting books and scholar results to recent results shows about a 2:1 ration for doubled, so moving there. If anyone feels especially strong on this issue, I suggest a second request focused on it alone.-Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:13, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sacharias JansenZacharias Jansen – Move back over the existing redirect. Google books "Zacharias Jansen" telescope = 1,420 results[1]. Google books "Zacharias Janssen" telescope = 1,090 results[2]. Spellings of "Sacharias" barley break 100 in Google books. Text The History of the Telescope By Henry C. King uses "Jensen" with one "S"[3]. Not sure if this is controversial but Zacharias Jansen is a redirect page with a two edit history which may be (is?) technical so needs an admin. Also Talk:Sacharias Jansen#Spelling.
