This article reads like a dump of the artist's complete list of works. Does anyone who is knowledgeable about art feel able to reduce this to a compact article that is more encyclopedic? It currently reads like something that is cut-and-pasted from his resume. We don't need to know about every one of his shows, but if there are articles that others have written about him, we would like to get a more complete picture of his significance. The list of shows is probably available on an external website that we could link to, and thus does not have to be included here. EdJohnston 23:45, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On a whim, I put a note on the talk page for the sculpture article in hopes someone there may pick it up. I've tried contacting the Portal:Visual_arts before, but that does not seem very active. Keesiewonder 00:48, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hoax?

[edit]

I've gone through some of the extensive resume. I can't find any sources to substantiate the claims made. The "artist" is a presence on a large number of online communities. Possible hoax?--Ethicoaestheticist (talk) 22:10, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Student exhibitions and awards

[edit]

I've removed from the extensive resume shows and awards dated to when the subject was a student. These are unlikely to be significant, at least until notability can be established.--Ethicoaestheticist (talk) 21:37, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've also removed from the list of exhibitions the ones that are clearly group shows. Usually WP contemporary artist biographies list only significant exhibitions (museum solo shows or participation in the Venice Biennale, documenta etc.).--Ethicoaestheticist (talk) 21:59, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, now I've removed an open-submission competition and some galleries that don't seem to exist outside the artist's biography. That's not to say they never did exist, just that the exhibitions are unlikely to be significant. I've also removed a 1977 group show (“Das Sofortbild Polaroid,” Aktionsgalerie). This may be more significant because it appears on the CVs of other artists (John Baldessari, Peter Weibel, Valie Export), though Messen-Jaschin isn't listed in the exhibition catalogue [1].--Ethicoaestheticist (talk) 17:56, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bibliography

[edit]

Removed from article:

  • 1967 Modern Nordisk Konst Göteborg Sweden, Edition Modern Nordisk Konst Sweden. (Vague.)
  • 1972 IDOLS Walter Zurcher Verlag Bern/Switzerland([2]). (Link doesn't work. This one does [3]. No mention of the artist in the book description.)
  • 1974 CAHIER DE LA DANSE 58/59 Lausanne/Switzerland. (Vague.)
  • 1977 III.Berner Kunstausstellung Textil, Glas, Holz, Ton, Stein, Metall Kunsthalle Berne/Edit. Stämpfli + Cie AG Bern/Switzerland;([4])(Link doesn't work, but this one does [5]. No reference to the artist in the book description. This looks like the catalogue of a Bern art fair.)
  • 1978 «Sculptures en liberté», Nyon/Switzerland, Evian/France Edition Galerie Henry Meyer Lausanne/Switzerland;([6]) (Published by the gallery.)
  • 1978 René Neuenschwander critical of art/ Die Holzschnitte von Youri Messen-Jaschin (Portrait) Verlag Restaurant Rathaus, Berne/Switzerland (Published by a restaurant? Maybe it's this one [7])
  • 1982 Buch der Berner rekorde und superlative Erpf verlag, Berne/Switzerland. (Book about Bern, could be anything, really).
  • 1983 Selection Reader Digest/Switzerland. (Vague, could be anything, an article, an exhibition announcement, whatever).
  • 1979 Jack Lenort Larsen " Art fabrics in the seventies" New York/USA (The correct name of the the author is Jack Lenor Larsen, but I can't find this book on WorldCat. Publisher or ISBN would help).
  • 1990 Selection Reader Digest/Switzerland. (Vague.)
  • 1991 LAUSANNE-PALACE History and chronicles (75 years of a prestigious hotel) Presses Centrales Lausanne SA Lausanne/Switzerland;([8]) (Link doesn't work. Unlikely that a history of a hotel has much to say about the artist - perhaps they have one of his pictures.)
  • 1993 Selection Reader Digest/Switzerland. (Vague.)
  • 1997 LE MOIS économique et financier /Société de Banque Suisse (SBS) octobre 1997 Editeur: Société de Banque Suisse 4002 Bâle. (An in-house magazine? A public report? Who knows?).
  • 1997 Der MONAT in Wirtschaft und Finanz /Schweizerischer Bankverein (SBS) Oktober 1997 Verlag: Schweizerischer Bankverein 4002 Basel([9]). (Link doesn't work. Another bank report. Anybody's guess what this has to do with the artist.)
  • 1997 Il MESE Economico e Finanziario /Società di Banca Svizzera (SBS) Ottobre 1997 Editeur: Società di Banca Svizzera 4002 Basel. (More bank stuff.)
  • 1997 Diners Club Magazine November 1997 Nr.II Verlag: Diner Club Switzerland CH. 8306 Brüttisellen. (Vague. Is this an article about the artist? An exhibition listing? or, a picture on a wall - see below.)
  • 2009 Elément terre "Magazine Tendance Déco" July - August Editor IRL Lausanne, Switzerland. (One of the artist's paintings is on the wall of a home photographed for an interiors magazine) [10]
  • 2009 Karl's Kühne Gassen Buch; Editor: Karl's Kühne Gassenschau; Print and Production Karl Schwegler AG, Zurich-Oerlikon; ISBN 978-3-033-01969-0 (Vague. Karl's Kühne Gassenschau is a performing arts festival. Is the artist just listed as a participant, or is there a more substantive article about him?)

Journalism

[edit]

I've removed the artist's publications to here. An encyclopedia article isn't a list of everthing a person's ever done.

Catalogue introductions

[edit]

I'm moving the list of exhibition catalogues to here. Exhibitions have catalogues. They're all possible sources of information about the artist, but they don't all need to be listed in the article if they're not referred to in the text, and they don't contribute to the notability of the subject.--Ethicoaestheticist (talk) 22:03, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Scholarships and prizes

[edit]

List of scholarships and prizes moved to here. Please note that when I say I can't find sources for an award I don't mean simply that I can't find sources confirming the artist as a recipient. Rather, I can't find sources for the award existing at all or being awarded to anybody. --Ethicoaestheticist (talk) 22:36, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • 1966 Högskolan för Design & Konsthantwerk/Göteborgs Universitet Göteborg Sweden (Scholarship Swedish State) (Presumably a student scholarship - not significant.)
  • 1971 1st prize for an electro-space sculpture for Gould corporation Eistetten Germany (Minor prize which doesn't seem to have an existence outside of the artist's biography - possibly another way of saying that he was commissioned by the Gould Corporation, or a piece was bought, which is already stated in the article.)
  • 1985 "Premio Mondiale della cultura"/Statua della Vittoria Centro studie ricerche delle nazioni, Calvatone Italy (Minor prize that dosn't seem to exist outside of the artist's biography. Calvatone is very small, with a population just over 1,000.)
  • 1985 Diploma of nomination,"d'Accademico d'Europa" (Per la sua attivita' culturale e professionale) delivered by Centro Studi e Ricerche l'Accademia d'Europa, Salsomaggiore Terme PR/Italy (I'm not entirely sure what a 'diploma of nomination' is. Was he nominated for an award, but didn't get it? Is the nomination itself the award? Either way, I can't find any sources confirming the existence of the award, or indeed the Centro Studi e Ricerche l'Accademia d'Europa. Salsomaggiore Terme is though larger than Calvatone, and has its own arts festival.)
  • 1986 Diploma of the European Fair Union, for the merits which he had received to the cause of the European Fair Union) Luxembourg (I can't find any sources confirming the existence of this award, and the European Union is pretty well documented.)
  • 2000 Ministry for culture & Terra Moretti Italy, Premio Internazionale di Scultura "Terzo Millennio" Erbusco, Italy (I can't find any sources for this prize.)
