Camp Onway

[edit]

Camp Onway is a defunct council camp, not notable outside the council. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 20:20, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As a stand-alone subject, establishment of notability of the camp outside of the local area is going to be difficult or impossible to show. The article needs to be edited down and merged into the council article. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 18:30, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reply from Mil41ler: Thanks but BSA is rich in history, including the facts about it's venerable camps and councils, still surviving or retired, add an important dimension to the casual reader or researcher. No Doubt the YCC page is in need need of expansion, but YCC is in flux. YCC professionals or their webmaster are in charge of this encyclopedic function. Camp Onway, the sister camp of Lone Tree has a very nice description of that camp, relatively uncontested in content. In that light, I am taking ownership of the project of telling the world about Lone Tree. So I propose to take most of the headings of the Lone Tree Scout reservation page and make separate pages for them with links to and from YCC and LTSR pages. Also, to clean up the article on the camp, make it easier to read -Sound good? --75.68.4.231 (talk) 23:21, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has standards for notability; see Wikipedia:Notability for the general standards and Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) for standards more specific to the camp article. In the context of the Scout camp:
  • Are there Wikipedia:reliable sources that establish notability outside of the local area?
  • Does the camp have a separate legal existence outside of the council?
  • Does the camp offer any significant services outside of Scouting?
I'm not sure of some of your statements:
  • "YCC professionals or their webmaster are in charge of this encyclopedic function." If you are stating that YCC members are editing the article in an official capacity, then there are issues.
  • "Camp Onway, the sister camp of Lone Tree has a very nice description of that camp, relatively uncontested in content." Camp Onway is no longer a Scout camp and is not part of the Scouting project. Frankly, the article is in terrible shape and
  • "I am taking ownership of the project" I understand your zeal, but you need to read Wikipedia:Ownership of articles and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. We are building an encyclopedia, not a comprehensive guide to every camp.

  • Support per Gadget850. Notability is an issue, as is the originator's 'ownership'. Merging would be a most conciliatory alternative to nominating for deletion. JNW (talk) 00:37, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Freedom of speech, my friend...Feel free to merge or do whatever is right. --Mil41ler (talk) 12:41, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
