2011 release

This whole section looks to have many inaccuracies.

For example The right mouse button works fine for me in the message body. Copy links, open in new window/tab, search, etc. Middle click works to open links in a new tab. Maybe it depends on the browser?

Also I can right click on an address/name and select "copy address"

Page-scrapers do not constitute supported protocols

The "Features" section for the "Free Version" under "Supported Protocols" says, "POP3 in Asia or via YPOPs!". POP3 access is not provided in the free version in the USA, and accessing it via YPOPs! (a page-scraper) is not only not supported (and hence not a "supported protocol"), but also may violate several of the Yahoo! terms of service, hence exposing the user to cancellation of the account amongst other consequences. I think that the same probably applies to the other "available via" entries (e.g. IMAP via Zimbra, etc.) if these are page-scrapers which they presumably are. While these programs can be mentioned somewhere in the article, it is incorrect that they should be listed as "supported protocols" of the service. David F (talk) 11:30, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Help page cannot be found

I have 998 messages on my email account page dating back to 2011. I am trying to sort by date so I can sort out the oldest. Everytime I try to isolate a group a message opens. If I could find help maybe I could work this out.1archie99 (talk) 20:56, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

I found out how to get rid of the old mail. I actually had to do a google search to find help page for yahoo mail; seems ridiculous. If there is a link to help someplace on the window displaying the list of messages on yahoo mail I would appreciate knowing where it is.1archie99 (talk) 21:29, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Since it seems the link is not wanted in the article itself, I'm inserting here on the talk page for future reference for any person(s) who are trying to find it because of forgetfulness or are merely curious. Hope it saves some time for others, as I had to look through the history myself.

us.mc598.mail.yahoo.com/mc/launch -- 76.115.36.89 (talk) 01:31, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Welp, appears that Yahoo! Mail Classic is finally gone since the link now redirects to an error page. I am a sad panda. 76.115.36.89 (talk) 01:19, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

The link currently in the article works: http://us.mc1252.mail.yahoo.com/mc/welcome -- Pemilligan (talk) 21:47, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

It only partially works. Yes, it takes you to an "old" login page BUT upon entering in your login information you are redirected to the "current" login page. I typed in the information a second time, and it brought up the new Yahoo! Mail. (Although in my original update, it simply lead to an Yahoo! error page.)
Classic Yahoo! Mail is dead, and the article ought to be updated accordingly. 76.115.36.89 (talk) 20:50, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. It's working just fine for me. -- Pemilligan (talk) 02:57, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Can anyone elaborate about the conditions that trigger the mandatory transition and end access to Yahoo! Mail Classic? I pay annually for my account and I still have access to the "Classic" version despite the warnings that I would loose access June 1st.--Kencaesi (talk) 18:50, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Account expiry on inactivity changed to 12 months

Can someone please update the following entry on account inactivity? http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Yahoo!_Mail#Free_version

" Account expiry on inactivity: 6 months plus 2 months for each year the account held active.[38] The account can be retrieved but all stored data, such as emails, are lost. "

Since according to yahoo help, it's a fixed 12 months limit:

http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&y=PROD_MAIL_ML&locale=en_US&id=SLN3057

" Why was my Yahoo! Mail account deactivated?
Did you receive an error message during sign-in that your account has been deactivated? There's a few possible reasons you received this message.
There are two possible reasons that a mail account can be deactivated
Yahoo! accounts are deactivated and removed after twelve months of not being used. An account is considered dormant if it hasn't been accessed for that interval, even if email has arrived during that time."

And (at least for me and 1 more unlucky unrelated person) there is no recovery of account, due to account recycling of july 2013

"Your Yahoo! account has been inactive for an extended period of time and is being recycled. If you need a new account, please sign up for a new one." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.97.17.239 (talk) 10:20, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

! in Name

this edit removed the ! symbol from the name in the infobox and various other places, including in category names. The category changes were recently reverted. The guidance at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Trademarks is:

"Avoid using special characters that are not pronounced, are included purely for decoration, or simply substitute for English words (e.g., ♥ used for "love"). In the article about a trademark, it is acceptable to use decorative characters the first time the trademark appears, but thereafter, an alternative that follows the standard rules of punctuation should be used[.]"

In line with that, should we have a local consensus to prefer "Yahoo" to "Yahoo!"? If so, should that include proposing a rename of the related categories? DES (talk) 16:04, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Talk page cleanup?

I noticed that user:Ukexpat has removed 5,984 bytes from this talkpage in this edit. Did anyone check it? Wouldn't it be better to set up an archive for old discussions rather than allowing user discretion about which postings are appropriate here? XOttawahitech (talk) 16:15, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Everything I removed was "support forum" stuff and clearly not aimed at improving the article. Happy for it it to be reviewed, but if I am right, it doesn't belong in an archive either. --ukexpat (talk) 20:05, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Ottawahitech: as ukexpat says, the material does not belong here, as it is not discussion about the article. But it does look useful. You could copy it to a subpage of your user page, to preserve it; though few people would be likely to find it there. Maproom (talk) 21:11, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
@Ukexpat: @Maproom: While you, and other editors who know you, may feel this way, try to put yourself in the shoes of an editor who does not know you. All they can see is that you removed a large chunk of text contributed by other editors in good faith. Would you blindly trust such reverts? Who should police this page to make sure only "support forum stuff text" is removed? XOttawahitech (talk) 20:06, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
there are no police on Wikipedia. However, our policies are clear on what talk pages of article should and shouldn't be used for. Asking support questions about yahoo mail is clearly out of bounds. I don't see any consensus to restore those comments, so absent many other editors defending the utility of those comments wrt this article, they should remain iced.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 20:31, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
@Obiwankenobi: There are also clear guidelines about the removal of other editors comments on talkpages. XOttawahitech (talk) 15:41, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
My view is that destroying content will indeed invite suspicion. But moving it elsewhere (as I suggested), with a note explaining why and where it has gone, will allay much of this suspicion. Maproom (talk) 20:59, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

Korea

The link given for Yahoo mail Korea does not work. Koreans with Yahoo accounts have told me they had to switch to Yahoo.com. 211.225.33.95 (talk) 04:59, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

POP3 Access

As of October 2014, it appears that POP3 access is no longer a premium service, but instead available to all subscribers, even in the United States. 173.2.58.242 (talk) 09:52, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Needs privacy policy discussion

The article needs a mention of Yahoo's email data retention policy, how long emails are saved on Yahoo's servers after user deletion (6 months or 18 months or ?), etc. Users can request restoration of accidentally deleted emails, but only if the email date is within the past seven days. Older emails cannot be restored, but are they still hidden on their servers for 6 or 18 months? These are qiestions I'd like to see an expert discuss in the article. 5Q5 (talk) 17:36, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Opening Yahoo email accounts

Someone must have hacked my e-mail because I received messages from my contacts that I had been arrested in Tokyo or Turkey and I needed money. It was on Feb. 2 that I received fewer than usual number of messages in my inbox and have not received any message until now. According to the instructions I changed my password and security answers to security questions on Feb. 4. What can I do to have my e-mail services back to normal? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.255.252.97 (talk) 22:43, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Editing

Howdy! I will be working on this article. I anticipate:

  • editing and revising sentences to make them clearer, such as in the 'History' section
  • correcting some citation and hyperlink formatting/placement
  • making small grammatical changes.
  • finding content to accompany the bullet points in the 'Features Section (Free Version)'

I plan on keeping a list of potential edits on my personal page in case anyone is curious about specific changes. Once I have a comprehensive list, I plan on publishing it on this talk page. Thanks, Txmormon97 (talk) 21:35, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

General Queries

Should it be written 'Yahoo' or 'Yahoo!'? It changes throughout the article.
I do not understand the following sentence from the article: "From 2007, Yahoo! provided major New Zealand Telecom's email service, which came under criticism in early 2013 following a spam and phishing attack that was described as the biggest to have ever hit the country." (Controversy: Phising Attack: First ¶) Does 'major' need to be replaced with 'majority'? Txmormon97 (talk) 21:37, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

Older Emails Disappearing Controversy

I've heard that Yahoo Mail loses or drops older email messages. It looks like it happened to me. I'd like to know more about this, why it happens, and what Yahoo's response was. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.95.174.225 (talk) 23:02, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

Adding and Moving Sections

In the features section, there seems to be more than two configurations of e-mail plans (free and business) that are stated. There are seemingly four: Free plan, Plus plan, Ad Free plan, and Business Plan. For example for the "Plus Plan" we can literally take the section in "History" that details the Plus Plan and move it into a "Plus Plan" section of "Features"
I feel like the POP3 section should be somewhere other than features. However, that being said, I do recognize that POP3 is a 'feature' of Yahoo!. It just doesn't seem to fit where it is right now. There is also a lot of information about POP later that does not seem to reflect in the 'POP3 section.'
I feel like the History section can become more clear by breaking it apart into smaller sections like it was done later (e.i. 2011 release, 2013 release, 2015 release). Perhaps new sections can be called Acquisition and 1997 release; 2002 Updates; and Competition and 2004 Updates. What do ya'll think?
Txmormon97 (talk) 21:37, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
Major changes are needed in the description of the configurations. There is no longer a Plus version. There is a Basic and Full Featured version. There is also a Beta test of a new version. It now refers to the Full Featured version as Classic. A complete rewrite is needed.
In addition to the versions Yahoo has switched to IMAP for security reasons. More detail is needed about that. Denmarks (talk) 17:51, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Privacy of emails

I would like to add this into the list of 'controversies', although there is probably so much user apathy that I'm not sure it fits as a controversy. Anyway, like Gmail, Yahoo! Mail is allowed to read through all users' emails, for the purpose of showing targetted advertising to each of those users.
Here is verbatim text from the current (new) user agreement:
"By selecting 'OK', our technology will also analyse your communications to provide additional email features, like deals when you travel, and tailored content and ads across our network."

Something being true does not make it a controversy. We would need a reliable source that discusses this and says it is controversial. ~ GB fan 11:42, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
