"Careful plot"? It's generally considered to be a mess.

"Ameliorative Satire and the Seventeenth-Century Chinese Novel" by Yenna Wu. Chinese Studies Volume 9. Edwin Mellen Press, 1999. Described by Journal of the American Oriental Society as the first English-language monograph devoted to the Xinghi yinyuan zhuan, so would be a really solid reference if anyone has access to it and feels like diving in.
