[edit]XPDL was developed by the Workflow Management Coalition and is in use as a interoperability standard by 30 to 40 products/open source projects today.
The reason it is important is because the future of interoperability of systems over long term transactions depends on this kind of standard, and this is the only one that fits this bill. BPEL is a common comparison, but this article explains the difference: [1]
In my industry, it is probably the most important and relevant standard today. As evidence of this, here is a list of companies/products that implement the standard: [2]
X/Y inclusion
