Expansion tag

[edit]

I've replaced the expansion tag. It was removed once before, the the article wasn't really expanded. There could be a few more sections added, such as a history section, current information, and maybe a gallery, etc., etc. I don't have time to do all this, but I'm familiar enough with the bell to know this article could stand some improvements. A couple problems

[edit]
  • "The bell is only swung on special occasions." -- The Newport, KY website says "swings daily at

noon in honor of world peace." [1] Can anyone confirm that the bell is (or is not) rung regularly?

  • I changed the article to read "was swung for the first time" (instead of "rang for the first time"), as the bell had been rung, probably many hundreds of times, by visitors on the barge that carried it up the Mississippi. This was achieved with a smaller, externally mounted and electronically controlled clapper mechanism [2] that was part of the barge installation. They even had a big red button, and I pushed it!

Those are some good edits to make the article more accurate. I believe the bell does get swung daily to ring it. It never gets a full circle ring; only about a quarter turn ring.Mfields1 01:24, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rewriting

[edit]

I cut out ref to bell in NZ and found there are 20+ world wide. It and the organisation might be worth articles; first was in Japan so worth the ref.
Now less like an essay padded to a target number of words. I can't quite square what article says about casting and its supervision with what a linked foundry's site says.--SilasW (talk) 13:35, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
