Question

[edit]

I thought Woodbines used to be made by W D and H O Wills?-anonymous

I bought a packet yesterday, and they still carry the WD & HO Wills name on the packet-GeorgeFormby1

This article is inaccurate, as I used to run a newsagents in England and sold Woodbines, and that was at least 13 years after 1988. EnglishDez (talk) 12:55, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article claims they are strongly flavoured. Like Camels and the majority of US brands, they are probably made using Turkish or Bright leaf. Milder flavoured cigs, now a minority, are usually made from Virginia leaf. Virginia crops are increasingly suffering from diseases and are diminishing in commercial volume.220.240.228.248 (talk) 23:14, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

At tuppence the packet, how much did they lose?

[edit]

It says in the article that the advertising budget was £12,500 per pound of tobacco sold. I don't see how they could break even paying that much for ads and charging 2d per packet. My guess is maybe 12.5 pence per pound? Or maybe the laws of nature and of nature's God worked differently in interbellum Britain? Dunno, I'm an American. --Haruo (talk) 21:27, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
