New Section: Women's Rights

[edit]

I will adding a section to this article entitled "Women's Rights" because although a number of sections in this article address women's rights issues tangentially, they do not address the actors, causes, manifestations, and legal underpinnings of women's rights in Brazil. First, This is an important addition because a page on women in Brazil would not be complete without a specific section on the rights granted to women. I will organize this new section chronologically in order to illustrate when certain rights were granted to women, and thus offer a comprehensive look at the history of women's rights in Brazil. Though suffrage is addressed briefly in the article, I intend to elaborate on suffrage in Brazil as the first women's movements in the history of Brazil. I will expand on the movement started by Bertha Lutz, the ways in which women petitioned for the right to vote, and the subsequent offshoots of the suffrage movement. Other points of discussion will include reproductive rights, political rights, labor rights and the general attitude of Brazilian law in regard to women. I am particularly interested in sex-worker rights as well since prostitution remains legal in Brazil, and sex workers have increasingly organized their efforts in guarantee their rights to healthcare and protection from police or gang violence. This section will focus on specific legal rights granted to women in contrast with access or participation issues that are addressed in the rest of the article. This new section will link to an expanded article on "Women's Rights in Brazil," which will address specific legal rights as well as how they are applied in practice. Your absolutely right, this page does need a section on womens rights. It sounds like your really passionate about the topic, so just try and make it unbiased and encyclopedic. good luckMillertime246 (talk) 22:04, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
