Largest in the South?

True. I questioned this so went and looked it up. Even though I was born and educated in the South, I didn't recall Maryland being a Southern State. The article Confederate States of America, and another article online, made it clear to me that Maryland was indeed below the Mason-Dixon line (map) and was a slave-state; however, Maryland was prevented from seceding from the Union and was not a part of the Confederacy. What I also gleaned from the original source material (in text version or PDF reproduction) was that in 1853 the public thinking was already attuned to a division of Northern States and Southern states.
