"the acceptance of colour photography by the highest validating institution"

[edit]

The 1976 Eggleston show at MoMA was a watershed for photography, readers of this article are told, because the show marked:

"the acceptance of colour photography by the highest validating institution" (in the words of Mark Holborn)

An exhibition of color photography (by Ernst Haas) had been mounted by MoMA as early as 1962; was this not "acceptance"? Or wasn't Holborn aware of this fact when he made this comment? (Certainly the myth that the 1976 Eggleston show of color photography was MoMA's first is one that's widely repeated. But, inconveniently, it's untrue.) And where did Holborn make the comment?

Yes, Google does show this comment, verbatim, again and again. But every one of these seems to be a scrape of Wikipedia, or otherwise unreliable. -- Hoary (talk) 05:30, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
